Laurel Leaf Counselling

Laurel Leaf Counselling Hello, I'm a qualified counsellor based in Plymouth, as well as online wherever you are in the UK. I understand how it feels to need someone to listen.

I'm a registered member of the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy. Maybe you don't get chance to talk openly with the people in your life, or perhaps you've fallen into unhelpful patterns. With my support, we can begin to change this. My philosophy & how I work

I work in an integrative way, meaning I can bring together different approaches depending on your needs. This always comes from a person-centred place, where I will work with you. Every person deserves to be seen as a unique, three-dimensional individual. One of the biggest things I can help with is facilitating awareness. Awareness of your past, your relationships, who you are, and what you want. Many people struggle to recognise or express certain parts of themselves, but I hope with my help you can begin to feel whole and become your true self. Sometimes it’s hard to find the words; in these times, we can try working in a more creative way if you find this helpful. I also offer walk & talk therapy for those that find inspiration from being in nature. Some clients may want a little more direction and I am happy to offer this where needed. It’s about figuring out who you are and what you want. I will do my best to meet you where you are on your journey and share that journey with you. Who I work with

I work with adults of all ages. I have experience of providing counselling across different settings, including charity and educational environments. I work with a range of different issues, including anxiety, depression, stress, relationships, grief, identity, and low self-esteem. What's next? I offer a discounted first session of only £25 for one hour. I understand it can be a daunting prospect starting therapy and it’s important to find the right fit for you. There's no obligation to continue after this if you choose not to. Get in touch via my website or email to find out more or to book a first session!

✨️ Glimmers are like the opposite of triggers. The little moments of hope and joy in your life ✨️

Try noticing these glimmers each day and see how it brightens your outlook, even just a little bit 🥰

Be honest, how often is this the case? 🙃🙊

Often avoidance feels easier in the short term but the anxiety and stress of it will just keep building up. In the end, it usually turns out to be fine and you wonder why you put it off so long in the first place!

This quote from the book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West really struck me because I think it's so true. Animals don't care what anyone thinks of them, they just do what comes naturally to them.

Not saying we should all give into our animal instincts, but could probably learn a thing or two from our animal friends.

Also, this line is maybe a bit judgemental. It's not the fault of the child and it's understandable why they (and we as adults) do it. It's societal expectations and pressures, it's the don'ts and the shoulds.

In life, just like with running, you don't have to go at anybody else's pace but your own 🏃‍♀️

And if you want to increase your pace, do it for yourself, not to try and catch up with the person in front of you. That person might have been running longer, have more opportunities to train, have longer legs etc. Just like everybody has different resources, different histories, different support networks, different obstacles to face.

We are not all the same. We run and live at different paces 😌

Winter can be a really hard time of year for many people, especially those who are already isolated and lonely.

If you can, check in on your neighbours, your colleagues, extended relatives (especially older people). Even a small interaction can make a huge difference to someone 💙

Relational trauma comes from not having your needs met by the people in your life that are meant to take care of you. Things like safety, security, love, acceptance, consistency, attunement.

Therefore, the only real way to heal from this is through a reparative relationship, from someone who can provide a secure base. This can be a therapist, good friend, partner etc.

Once you know what co-regulation feels like from being with this safe person, you can then begin to self-regulate and forge new, healthy connections with others.

This is something I've heard from a lot of people, who say it allows them to just focus on that one thing and not worry about all the other stuff for a while.

Would you try climbing? 🧗‍♀️

People using climbing walls in Gloucestershire and Wiltshire say it helps their mental wellbeing.

If it seems like things are dark right now, know that it will pass, just like the clouds ☁️

Good mental health looks different for everyone and it's important to regularly keep track of how you're feeling so you know what's "normal" for you.

However, if you're not sure what you're looking for, these are some of the signs that your mental health may be in a good place 😌

If you are struggling with your mental health, don't hesitate to reach out to a mental health professional, your GP or a crisis support line.

When in the Netherlands...

Niksen is a Dutch concept meaning "doing nothing" 😌

It's been adopted as an antidote to our busy modern lives, where it can feel like we always have to be doing something 🫨 Whether that's working, socialising, keeping kids entertained, or even just scrolling on our phones - it's constant external stimulation. This can lead to stress and burnout 🤯

Doing nothing is about truly relaxing, and can be taken literally or meaning doing something like going for a walk or listening to music but with no purpose - it's not about achieving something.

Do you practice Niksen?

You can let your anger control you OR you can control it ❤

It can sometimes feel like you have no control over your emotions, but you do! You can pause. Listen to them. Let them pass. Channel them for good - into creativity, action, whatever you want.

How do you respond to anger? 😡
