Pilates vs Cardio & Strength Training — what’s the difference? And do you need both?

It’s a question we’re often asked. Is Pilates enough? Do I still need cardio? Should I be strength training too?

The simple answer… they’re different — and they complement each other beautifully.

Pilates focuses on controlled, precise movement. It builds deep core strength, improves posture, enhances mobility and develops body awareness. It’s about alignment, stability and moving well. You strengthen from the inside out.

Traditional strength training focuses on progressively building muscle through resistance. It increases bone density, supports metabolism, improves power and makes everyday tasks easier and more efficient.

Cardio training strengthens the heart and lungs. It improves endurance, supports cardiovascular health, boosts energy levels and plays an important role in overall wellbeing.

They each have a unique purpose — but together, they create a well-rounded, balanced approach to health and fitness.

Pilates improves the quality of your movement.
Strength training builds capacity and resilience.
Cardio supports heart health and stamina.

When combined, you move better, get stronger, reduce injury risk and feel fitter in everyday life.

At APT Health & Wellness, our boutique private studios are designed to cater for all of this. From Reformer and Mat Pilates to strength-focused sessions and higher-energy classes, we ensure you have access to a variety of training styles — all delivered in small groups, with expert coaching and a supportive community.

Because true health isn’t one-dimensional.
It’s balanced.
It’s intentional.

And it’s built with the right support around YOU

What does strength really mean in Pilates?

When people think about strength, they often picture heavy weights, big lifts or high intensity workouts. But strength in Pilates is just as real, just as powerful — and just as important

In Pilates, strength is about control, stability and precision.

It’s about engaging the deep muscles that support your spine.

It’s about moving with intention.

It’s about holding alignment when your body wants to give up.

Strength isn’t louder just because it’s heavier.
It isn’t more valid because it looks intense.

The meaning of strength doesn’t change depending on the type of exercise you do. Strength is strength.

What does change is the story behind it.

For one person, strength might be progressing their Reformer springs.
For another, it’s rebuilding after injury.
For someone else, it’s simply walking into the studio feeling nervous and choosing to begin.

Strength looks different at every level. It evolves with experience, confidence and ability. But whether you’re lifting weights, holding a plank, or mastering slow, controlled Pilates movements — you are building resilience in both body and mind.

In our classes, strength isn’t measured by comparison. It’s measured by progress. By effort. By showing up.

And that kind of strength belongs to everyone.

💪 Strength training isn’t just about muscles — it’s about life 💪

When people hear “strength training,” they often think it’s only about building muscle or lifting heavy weights. But the truth is, strength training supports so much more than how you look — it supports how you live.

Strength training helps you move through everyday life with more ease and confidence. Carrying shopping bags, lifting children, climbing stairs, getting up from the floor — all become easier when your body is strong and supported.

It plays a huge role in bone health, helping to reduce the risk of osteoporosis as we age. It also supports joint stability, improves posture, and reduces aches and pains by strengthening the muscles that protect your body.

Beyond the physical, strength training is incredible for your mental health. It boosts confidence, improves mood, reduces stress, and gives you a sense of achievement that carries into other areas of life.

It can improve balance and coordination, lowering the risk of falls, and it supports a healthy metabolism — helping with energy levels and long-term health.

Strength training isn’t about chasing a certain look.
It’s about feeling capable.
Feeling resilient.
Feeling strong enough for everyday life.

And that kind of strength is for EVERYONE!

Pilates is one of the BEST core workouts — and here’s why...

When people think “core,” they often picture crunches and sit-ups. But true core strength goes far deeper — and that’s exactly where Pilates shines.

Pilates works your entire core system: abdominals, deep stabilising muscles, lower back, glutes and pelvic floor. Instead of just training the surface muscles, it strengthens the muscles that support your spine, posture and everyday movement.

Every Pilates movement is controlled, intentional and connected to breath. This means your core is switched on throughout the whole session — not just for one section of the workout. The result? A stronger, more stable, more functional body.

Whether you’re on the Reformer or the mat, Pilates builds deep strength without high impact, making it one of the safest and most effective ways to train your core at any level.

Better posture.
Improved balance.
Reduced aches and pains.
A core that supports you in everything you do.

That’s why Pilates isn’t just a core workout — it’s one of the best.
