Do you find it hard to delegate?

Or if you have to delegate - do you find yourself checking over what is done to see if it looks 'right'?

These might be signs that you are struggling with perfectionism. You might not see it as that and might not even see perfectionism as a problem. It is often talked about as a badge of honour - meaning you will get better results and not miss anything.

The reality might be different - over checking others work and taking on more for yourself might lead to the opposite of efficiency and effectiveness......let alone increasing stress and doubt. Rather than being in control, the level of workload might become overwhelming and can feel more out of control than ever.

Dealing with perfectionism can be tricky as underlying beliefs about yourself or others might be driving your high standards.

Please check your therapist through the BACP and make sure they are accredited. Don't be afraid to ask the therapist for proof of their qualification. Be worried if your therapist has qualified in 6 weeks. It took me 18 months to become a CBT Therapist on top of my 3 years to become a nurse and 3 years for a degree

Let's talk internal stigma
This week I was talking to someone who had reached out finally for support. He was struggling with anxiety and this had been going on for some time. He had got to the point where he was so anxious and fearful that he couldn't leave the house to go to work.

He was a manager and leader and he couldn't face other people knowing how anxious he was feeling about all the changes taking place currently. He did speak to his GP who said he should take some time off and referred him to the NHS. Unfortunately the waiting list is so long that he sought out other help.

However he hadn't told his Lead at work as he was fearful, He thought he would be seen as a terrible manager, not up to the job and ultimately sacked. There was no evidence for this viewpoint and when asked what he would do if one of his team members came to him with anxiety - his response would be the opposite. We talked it through and he realised he was being prejudiced against himself! Self stigma, had stopped him getting the help he so desperately needed.
