We received a visit at home today from Natalie Giles from Dorset’s STARS charity ( The Sexual Trauma And Recovery Service). Natalie is Head of Adult Counselling for STARS and came to accept our funding of £2,500 which will pay for play therapy and counselling for children aged between 4 and 10 years who are referred to STARS. A very worthwhile cause I’m sure you’ll all agree - thank you for your support which makes our donations possible!

When life is challenging, it can become very easy to become overwhelmed by the trauma, to the point where the trauma takes up all your head-space and managing the trauma takes up all of your energy. It might feel like you are existing only in the shadow of that trauma, or that the trauma has a ‘hold’ over you in the form of difficult triggers, or symptoms of PTSD.

Therapy can enable you to reduce the space that the trauma takes up.
It can be an opportunity for you to reclaim your head-space and your energy.
It can be an opportunity for you to find the ‘you’ that is waiting patiently in the shadows.

Growth that is messy, resilient and unfiltered brings the most beauty, courage and strength!
It is unique,
It is joyful,
It sings its own song.

Therapy gives you the opportunity to sing yours.

At a lifeguarded beach the red and yellow flags signal where it is safe to swim. So long as you are in between two flags then you should be ok. Swimming between the flags can feel like a risk, but its a calculated one. The water has been deemed safe from weather conditions, currents and rip-tides. It is safe to paddle, to feel the water washing over your feet, to feel the cold of it pushing and pulling with the waves.

The basic rule is very clear

- Stay within the safety zone

- Stay between the red and yellow flags

- Stay in shallow water.

When humans experience trauma the central nervous system becomes hardwired to be hyper-vigilant to threat. We anticipate it, predict it, see it around every corner. We are in survival mode every minute of every day, in a constant state of fight or flight. Suddenly we find ourselves living in a world where there is no safety zone marked out with flags. Every step we take feels like being plunged into deep turbulent water.

Triggers are everywhere.

Nowhere feels safe.

We don’t know what or whom to trust.

The anxiety is all consuming and exhausting.

It affects memory.

It affects relationships.

It affects our ability to navigate through the day.

We dumb down our feelings because our gut instincts feel like they are betraying us.

The first stage of trauma work is called Safety And Stabilisation. In this stage of therapy you and your therapist will work slowly and gently to work out a way of being together which feels safe enough for you to develop trust in the therapist and trust in the process. Together you will establish a safety zone, you will pitch the flags together to mark out the boundaries of what you can and can’t tolerate. Together you will paddle in the shallow water of your life’s experience knowing that you can easily step back out if the waves begin to feel choppy. You can observe your trauma rather than be submerged in it

Just like swimming in the sea between the flags,
Therapy might feel risky at first.
But it is a calculated risk.
It is a measured risk.

And if you get to reclaim your life and your joy then surely it’s a risk worth taking?

Blog Post #4 Why Do I Feel Invisible?
If you are living with a feeling of emotional ‘numbness’ or ‘invisibility’ then you are not alone. The impact of often causes us to suppress deeply felt emotion in order to be able to put on our ‘game-face’. The thing is, our brain doesn’t filter which feelings and emotions to numb which can lead to a feel of huge disconnection with yourself and the world.

Have you ever felt you are somehow sitting ‘just outside’ of yourself? Or that you are observing life happening around you without being truly part of it?

Sometimes the effects of deep trauma, difficult life events, depression and stress can cause a feeling of disconnection.

Lots of people call this ‘feeling numb’
Or ‘unable to feel emotion’

Therapy helps you explore these feelings, to sit with them and to properly ‘feel’ them. It helps you make sense of why you are feeling the way you are, and offers strategies to manage when you are feeling overwhelmed. Therapy helps you rediscover yourself so that all the parts of you that have felt repressed, or exiled, or numbed can be reintegrated safely back into your life’s timeline.

Therapy joins the dots!
It helps you return back into whole of yourself.
