📞We have been receiving lots of enquiries following the outbreak of Meningitis B in the Kent area. Understandably parents are concerned and therefore we would like to provide some clarity on available Meningitis vaccinations.
ℹ️ The best advice remains for young people to check that they are up to date with their vaccinations, including the MenACWY vaccine, which is free on the NHS until 25 years of age - please see your childs 'red book' or contact us online via an enquiry form.
ℹ️ The MenACWY vaccine offers good protection against several strains of meningococcal disease and is routinely offered to teenagers in school Years 9 and 10. However, it does NOT protect against all strains, including MenB, which can circulate among young adults.
ℹ️ At present anyone born after 1st May 2015 will have received their MenB vaccine as part of their childhood vaccinations. Children who missed doses can catch up free until their 2nd birthday (contact the GP practice)
❌MenB - There’s is currently no NHS catch up for those born before 1 May 2015. MenB vaccination for teens/young adults isn’t currently recommended, but advice is under review.
Therefore, we are currently unable to provide MenB vaccination for children outside of the national NHS vaccination programme.
‼️It is important to note that the MenB vaccine does not protect against every type of meningitis B and it is important to know the signs and symptoms: vomiting, severe headache, unexplained temperature rise, dislike of bright lights, neck stiffness, a non-blanching rash, drowsiness, and altered levels of consciousness.
Early recognition of meningitis and septicaemia symptoms can greatly improve the outcome of the disease, and so anyone concerned about any of these symptoms, at any time, should contact their GP, call NHS 111 or 999 in an emergency.
