8 years as a Personal Trainer and those 8 years have seen so much! I’ve learnt a lot from my own journey and the hundreds of women I have helped…
Here’s my top 10:
1) if you want sustained change you have to make the shift at an identity level, you have to believe this is who you are, even if you are not there yet.
2) every workout counts, even the ones where you only do half of what you intended or for some reason the run was a lot slower than normal. In fact the hard ones count the most, they build the resilience and are vital pieces of the puzzle.
3) if you love the process you’ll achieve the goal but it won’t work vice versa, if you’re not enjoying your training enough to do it on the hard days you can’t achieve the consistency needed to affect change.
4) age does play a part but it is never too late to start and you can make changes at any time in your life with the right support and coaching
5) if you become disciplined and gain strength in the gym this will spill over into other areas of your life and you will experienced greater confidence and clarity.
6) if you make significant changes to your life you will lose people along the way, but you will gain more.
7) no fitness journey is linear. You will have internal and external setbacks, these will build strength and are part of the fabric of life.
8) being healthy and fit is multi faceted and means different things to different people, you don’t have to deadlift huge weights to be strong and you don’t have to run fast to be fit.
9) your body has a preference for it’s shape and size, you can optimise your muscle mass, shape and tone but pursuing something that goes against your natural make up may become dis-enchanting fairly quickly.
10) an effective personal trainer won’t just look at what you do in the gym, they’ll build a picture of your whole life, you may tell them things you’ve never told anyone else and that’ll help them make sense of where you’re at any why and how you respond. People think personal training is expensive but it’s a lot cheaper then therapy!
