Did you know that if you have Severe Sight Impairment (SSI), you no longer need to go to your consultant ophthalmologist or eye clinic in order to apply for your 50% TV Licence fee reduction?

On examination, if a person meets the criteria for Severe Sight Impairment, your optician can issue you with a letter that can be used as evidence to apply for a 50% TV Licence concession.

It only applies to those with Severe Sight Impairment (SSI), not Sight Impairment (SI) and it does not replace certification

It is only for people seeking to evidence their eligibility for a 50% TV Licence concession. It is then up to you to send the letter as evidence to TV Licensing. To find out more, visit:

This initiative is the result of a ground-breaking agreement between the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), BBC TV Licensing and the Health and Social Care Board (HSCB) and will make it much easier for individuals with Severe Sight Impairment seeking the concession and will also ease the current pressures on consultant led hospital appointments.

Another hot and bright day 😎

The College has issued the following advice to safeguard eye health and vision over the summer months:

☀️If you’re spending more time outdoors, make sure you and your children have good quality sunglasses with UV protection. Look out for the British Standard (BS EN ISO 12312-1:2013), the CE or UKCA mark
👩‍🌾 Hats are not just a fashion accessory, they are also a great way to protect your eyes from the glare of the sun! Add an extra layer of protection this summer by wearing a hat with a wide brim or a sun visor to keep the eyes comfortable
🏊 Watertight goggles are a great way to protect your eyes while swimming. They can help shield your eyes from infection causing microbes often found in pools. If you wear contact lenses, we recommend you take them out before swimming.
🏡There is evidence that encouraging children to spend time outdoors could reduce the onset of myopia (short sightedness) so do try make sure they have some time playing outside each day.

UV protection is very important - who needed to find their sunglasses today??Hope everyone has had a lovely weekend .

☀️
Often we expose ourselves more to harmful UV-rays, while wearing sunglasses, assuming that our sunnies will have us covered - this isn’t always the case.
The investment in perfectly designed and optician-approved sunglasses is just that, an investment!
Cheap sunglasses may look cool for a short while, break easily or sit improperly - but looking beyond even that: cheap sunglasses with improper light filters can actually damage your eyes over time.

fun in the sun? Make sure you slip some sunglasses on your little ones to protect against UV damage. Always check for a CE / British Standard or UV 400 mark to ensure your sunnies provide adequate protection.

If you have glaucoma, your relatives are at higher risk of developing the disease. Please let them know and to advise their optometrist.

If you’ve got glaucoma, your relatives are at higher risk of developing the disease. Encourage them to have regular eye tests as early detection can help save your sight.
