We understand that some patients are concerned following recent reports of a meningococcal (MenB) outbreak in Kent. We would like to reassure our patients that there are currently no cases affecting our local area.

Public health authorities, including UK Health Security Agency, are closely managing this situation. Unless you have been specifically advised to contact us by NHS 111, we kindly ask that you do not contact the practice about this.

The MenB vaccine is part of the routine NHS childhood immunisation programme and has been offered to babies born on or after 1st May 2015. At present, we are unable to offer meningitis B vaccination outside of the national immunisation programme.
It’s important to remain vigilant for symptoms of meningitis, which can include:
• High fever
• Severe headache
• Neck stiffness
• Sensitivity to light
• Drowsiness or difficulty waking
• Vomiting
• A rash that does not fade when pressed

If you or your child develop these symptoms, do not attend the GP practice in person. Meningitis is a medical emergency and can spread through close contact, so attending the surgery may put others at risk and delay your care. Please seek urgent medical attention by calling 111, contacting the surgery for advice, or attending A&E if seriously unwell.

All sorted now - thank you for your patience.

We are sorry to let you know that we are experiencing a national outage issue with our telephone supplier. Some but not all calls are being received, and some calls are stuck in our system.

The supplier is working extremely hard to rectify the situation and hope to have us back up and running soon.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Today we would like to talk about cervical screening.

Denise who has been a Practice Nurse at Portishead Medical Group for 9 years, shares what you can expect if you’ve received an invitation for your cervical screening appointment.

Many of us put off having our cervical screening. We know there are lots of reasons behind this, and we are here to support you in any way possible to encourage you to attend.

When you receive your invitation, just give us a call and we can offer various appointment days and times, including early morning and evening appointments or we can send you a self-booking link to choose from available appointments.

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month and the NHS in the South West is sharing how people can help eliminate cervical cancer by 2040.

Are you a woman or someone with a cervix aged 25 to 64?
If you are a woman or someone with a cervix aged 25 to 64, make sure you are up to date with your cervical screening. Cervical screening saves thousands of lives each year by checking for warning signs of cancer and helping people catch cancer early.

If you’re worried about attending your cervical screening, you’re not alone. It may feel a little bit awkward, but to make you more comfortable you can ask for a friend to come with you for support, you can request a female doctor or nurse, and you can ask to talk through the process before it’s carried out. Our health professionals carry out screening tests every day and are trained to make you feel comfortable.

Whether you were invited a week, a month, or a year ago, you can still book your screening appointment – and you should still attend even if you have had you HPV vaccination. Do your part to eliminate cervical cancer by booking your screening with your GP today – it could save your life.
