This week felt historic to me. Abe Sutton the Deputy Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and Director of the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation (CMMI), the federal agency and research arm that tests new payment and care delivery models for Medicare and Medicaid and Susannah Bernheim, the chief medical officer of CMMI and their team came to my medical practice in Lenox Massachusetts to understand how a Functional Medicine practice works.
This is in preparation for providing $100 million in grants to research functional and lifestyle medicine for the treatment of chronic disease. The effort is called MAHA ELEVATE.
They will provide about 30 grants over the next three years to advance the science and implementation of a whole new paradigm in medicine healthcare based on root causes and understanding the body as a system. And using Food As Medicine.
I’ve been working on this my whole life. This is an extraordinary moment that I think will change medicine and healthcare forever. I honestly never thought it would happen in my lifetime.
Thank you to everyone who’s been a part of this journey— patients, consumers, and health care providers. You have made it all possible.
