The Hummingbird Project

The Hummingbird Project Hummingbird is an innovative, non-profit that provides mental health skills and support.

Lead by lived experience experts, it delivers authentic, measurable impact across Northern Ireland. The Hummingbird Project challenges itself, staff and Partners to constantly focus on providing impactful change to the mental health of workplaces and communities. If it isn’t something that we are proud of, that is proven to elevate people’s circumstances, we simply don’t do it. Our lived experience background gives us the passion, ownership and authenticity to innovate and go the extra mile. We KNOW that if a person can invest in, understand and protect their emotional health, as society does with physical health, everyone can become emotionally resilient. We CAN support those who have become emotionally unwell to co-create solutions for themselves, alongside appropriate medical intervention to recover. The journey of our clients, feedback of our partners and enthusiasm from our funders push us forward to continue to bring mental health out of the shadows. Any service we provide is lean, accountable and measurable- the highest impact in the most sustainable way. Our clients and commissioners become our best ambassadors, because they have experienced first-hand the difference that we co-create with them.

A Walk for Anita πŸ’›

On 8th November 2025, Anita Culbertson was diagnosed with breast cancer. In the weeks that followed, her family faced not only the challenges of a cancer diagnosis but also a devastating decline in her mental health.

Tragically, on 8th January 2026, Anita passed away.

Described as bright, caring, and full of life, Anita’s personality left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her. Her family are now inviting the community to come together to honour her memory and raise awareness around mental health.

On 6th September 2026, the Culbertson Family will host an event:

Event Details:

πŸ“ Meeting Point: Kelly’s

πŸ•™ Shuttle Buses: 10:00–11:30am from the car park

🚌 Transport: Provided by Translink Buses (75 people per trip)

πŸ“Œ Drop Off Location: The Pits, Portstewart

πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ Route: Coastal path (a route map will be available on the day)

πŸ‘₯ Groups: Walkers will be divided into groups of 30, each supported by marshals

⏱ Duration: Approximately 1–2 hours for the 5 miles

The walk is about more than distance. It’s about reflection, community, and encouraging people to check in with one another before things become overwhelming.

Following the walk, the event will continue at Kelly’s with:
🌭 BBQ
🎢 Live music from Big Atlantic (2pm–4pm)
🎨 Kids activities & face painting
🎟️ Raffle & more

Funds raised will support two important organisations:
πŸ’› Lifeline – Northern Ireland’s 24/7 crisis support helpline
πŸ’› The Hummingbird Project – providing mental health support through education and therapy

Those wishing to take part are encouraged to register using the link here to assist organisers with planning and safety on the day https://shorturl.at/NASgs

Whether walking or simply attending to support, the community’s presence will help create a meaningful tribute to Anita’s life.

SOMETHING NEW IS COMING! - And we want you to be a part of it!

Hummingbird is about to launch a new project that we have been building for the last few months. We want to elevate lived experience voices to share insights and let as many people know that they are not alone and there is always a way forward. Do you have a mental health journey that you would like to share? Any insights or suggestions that would be of help to someone who might be going through a tough time? We will stand alongside you to help you share your experience for good in a way that feels comfortable to you. Please send us a DM or email us at info@thehummingbirdproject.org.uk

I love Christmas BUT….there is no other time of year when we get more people reaching out to us in desperation- gut wrenching but true. This Christmas Hummingbird has NO funding support for people to get in touch with us directly, so please, if you can, give the BEST gift you can give to your community and sponsor time to talk.

Your donation WILL save a life this Christmas

Back to School day! 🫣 We hope everyone had a lovely summer and now that everyone is back at school we are excited to announce the overall winner of our Open your mind Schools project!

Every day throughout the Open week, hundreds of attendees visited our exhibit, with all of your amazing projects on show. They allowed us to spark amazing conversations about our area, how talented our young people are and how important looking after your emotional wellbeing is.

The votes kept coming and after every vote was counted, we had an overall winner…πŸ₯πŸ₯πŸ₯πŸ₯

Carnalridge Primary School!!!

Thank you all so much for your hard work and inspiring projects. We will be in touch with the Schools that participated later in the week about your projects but meantime 3 cheers for CARNALRIDGE!!!

Not only did you get the most votes, but 2 of your old alumni reconnected over your project after years of not seeing each other (see photo!) πŸ₯°
