𝑇𝑟𝑎𝑢𝑚𝑎 𝑖𝑠 𝑎 𝑟𝑜𝑜𝑡 𝑐𝑎𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑏𝑙𝑒𝑚𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑔𝑢𝑒 𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑙𝑑 𝑡𝑜𝑑𝑎𝑦. It is the result of a lack of love, connection, and belonging that every human being needs.
As an African proverb says, “𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑙𝑑 𝑤ℎ𝑜 𝑖𝑠 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑒𝑚𝑏𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑑 𝑏𝑦 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑣𝑖𝑙𝑙𝑎𝑔𝑒, 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑏𝑢𝑟𝑛 𝑖𝑡 𝑑𝑜𝑤𝑛 𝑡𝑜 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑙 𝑖𝑡𝑠 𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑚𝑡ℎ”.
This means that when a child is neglected, abused, or rejected by their family or community, they will grow up feeling angry, hurt, and resentful.
They will seek to lash out at the world that failed them, or numb their pain with harmful behaviors 𝑠𝑢𝑐ℎ 𝑎𝑠 𝑠𝑒𝑙𝑓 ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑚 𝑜𝑟 𝑎𝑑𝑑𝑖𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠.
𝑇𝑟𝑎𝑢𝑚𝑎 can be 𝑝𝑎𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑑 down from 𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 to generation, creating 𝑐𝑦𝑐𝑙𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑣𝑖𝑜𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒, oppression, and suffering. It can also be caused by events such as 𝑤𝑎𝑟, natural disasters, 𝑎𝑐𝑐𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠, or personal tragedies 𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒 𝑠𝑢𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑑𝑒, 𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑖𝑙𝑙𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠, 𝑎𝑑𝑑𝑖𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑒𝑡𝑐. Trauma affects not only the individual, but also their 𝑟𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠ℎ𝑖𝑝𝑠, their ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑡ℎ, and their 𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑎𝑙.
But trauma can also be ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑒𝑑. It can be healed by creating a new environment of 𝑙𝑜𝑣𝑒, 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑎𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛, and 𝑠𝑢𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑡. It can be healed by helping the traumatized person reconnect with their 𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑒 𝑠𝑒𝑙𝑓, their purpose, and their joy. It can be healed by offering 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑔𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠, understanding, and 𝑎𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑝𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒.
𝑊𝑒 𝑎𝑙𝑙 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑎 𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑝𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑏𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑡𝑜 ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑙 𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠𝑒𝑙𝑣𝑒𝑠 and each other from trauma. We all have a role to play in creating a more peaceful and harmonious world. We all have a chance to embrace the child within us and within others who needs warmth.
“Hurt people, hurt people.
That's how pain patterns get passed on, generation after generation after generation.
Break the chain today.
Meet anger with sympathy, contempt with compassion and cruelty with kindness.
Greet grimaces with smiles.
Forgive and forget about finding fault. Love is the weapon of the future.”

"In this African tribe, when someone does something wrong, they take the person to the centre of the village where the tribe surrounds him and for 2 days say all the good he has done.
The tribe believes each person is good but sometimes people make mistakes which are really a cry for help. They unite to reconnect him with his good nature. This is beautiful."
