BLACK FRIDAY FOR THOSE EXPERIENCING POVERTY
Brits will hear the clicking of credit and debit cards this weekend as the nation spends a staggering £6.4 billion.
It’s Black Friday, a day when the lure of a good deal proves too much for so many of us.
But while some are using present buying to gladden the hearts of loved ones, it is estimated that one in six people are living in poverty.
Some of those are very visible – including the .
As we have our roots in , we recognise that the festive period is the time to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Like many of faith (and no faith at all), we see Christmas becoming increasingly commercial.
Spending is not a crime and boosts our economy, but we hope the compassion seen in acts such as festive dinners, clothes, and food banks and even haircuts become a thing not just for Christmas.
Compassion for others all year around, would be the best present any of us could hope for.

UNDERSTANDING ADDICTION AT HOME – AND WORK
Men are much more likely to turn to alcohol or drugs to cope with their problems and this can affect their employment, warns an article.
Specialist HR publication The Director highlights how males turn to alcohol and drugs to cope with loneliness and stress.
Amazingly, many continue to hold down high performing roles before the inevitable crash. Which is why the article calls for employers to spot early signs which include reckless behaviour and poor time-keeping – go to https://www.thehrdirector.com/tackle-rising-drug-alcohol-addiction-male-employees/
Amongst Fix-Ups cohort are men who have not been able to hold down secure roles due to addiction. They also struggle to find work in the first place.
We agree with the notion that it is vital to get to the roots of what causes compulsive behaviours and for that we need the support of counsellors and other health and social care professionals.
If you can do that, please contact us and

TAKE A BOW, WHITE RIBBON DAY
Fix-Up offered its support to White Ribbon Day, where men were encouraged to commit to ending violence against women and girls.
The 25 November campaign inspired individuals and organisations to make a stand and challenge misogyny.
Fix-Up aims to improve the of men and navigate them away from violence and generally be more respectful of women and girls. We also support the calling-out of unacceptable behaviour.
Would you walk with us and help men overcome toxic environments and masculinity? Drop us a line and .

SINGING FROM THE SAME HYMN SHEET
Reading about how two prison leavers were transformed gives us encouragement that Fix-Up is on the right path.
The East Anglian based Community Chaplaincy (CCN) helps people of all faiths and none, rebuild their lives after being in custody.
Their mentoring work sounds simply superb, and it is interesting to read how it succeeded with two very different men who ended-up in prison for vastly different reasons – Simon and Frank (go to https://lnkd.in/enFc2zJJ).
Aside from the dramatic transformations they have made, CCN also encourage and inspire, and that’s certainly the case for us here in Greater Manchester.
May CCN and all other organisations like it continue to intervene positively in struggling peoples’ lives.
They do so with our blessing!

THE BUDGET?IT’S NOT MY BUSINESS
While the media will be going overkill on the UK’s annual spending plan, Britain’s youth will be turning a blind eye.
According to official Government research, most youngsters believe that politics has nothing to do with them, as it doesn’t impact on their daily lives.
Meanwhile, spending on the services that might make such a difference to their lives has been patchy at best, with a downward trend only recently bumped up with an increase in resources for youth clubs etc.
Fix-Up will certainly be keeping an eye on Chancellor Reeves’ budget – at the same time realising that our offer cannot be sustained by state funding alone.
Encouragingly the very same research by Government that showed a helplessness around politics, also revealed that young people are MASSIVELY interested in what goes on.
They’re curious, let’s encourage them to become empowered!

NOW IT’S THE BOY’S TURN
Following the country’s first-ever Women’s Health Strategy, the focus is turning onto men’s wellbeing.
The Government is teaming up with the Premier League to announce a new strategy aimed at improving mental health that also concentrates on gambling, drink and drug use (which is far higher in males than females).
The strategy has a candid mention of su***de prevention.
Whilst welcoming this, the proof of the pudding is once again in the eating. There has been much talk about getting men to “open-up” on issues for example – but little action on providing practical help (something we do here at Fix-Up).

SUPPORTING THE REDS HOMELESS SLEEPOVER
Fix-Up is giving the thumbs-up to supporter’s efforts to help rough sleepers and other vulnerable young people.
The club’s foundation urged supporters to bring their sleeping bag to Old Trafford on Friday night, sleep in the theatre of dreams, raise money and be reminded of how it feels to be living on the streets this winter (Read more, by visiting https://tinyurl.com/4fxhrxt4).
And United is not the only club to make a stand in our area. joined forces with our friends at to donate hats and scarves to those sleeping rough, while individual players such as Vincent Kompany (then at ) have done their bit, too.
Each and every one of them gets our support for fighting the corner of the vulnerable, raising awareness and helping end .

INSTEP ODD SOCKS TO BEAT BULLYING
This year’s Anti-Bullying Week nailed it – by encouraging all of us to wear odd socks and celebrate being unique!
And stamping harassment out is so important – given that over one-and-a-half MILLION children are bullied each year.
That not only impacts their growth and education, but also destroys self-confidence in adulthood, which can result in despair, joblessness and issues.
Fix-Up is here to mend the results of bullying – but we’d rather it didn’t happen in the first place.
Help us in our endeavours and .

The “We Can Work It Out!” project, created in partnership with Manchester City Council, The Hideaway Youth Project and led by The Works Construction Academy, offers hands-on training, industry qualifications and direct connections to employers in the construction sector.
In collaboration with DWP, Catch22, Working Wardrobe, BAM, and B&K, the fully funded course gives learners:
The chance to gain a CSCS card and Health & Safety Level 1 certificate
Support with CV writing and interview skills
Access to a Meet the Employer event to connect with real opportunities
Free interview clothing and help with right-to-work documents
The chance to visit a live construction site and gain valuable work experience
Fifteen learners have already joined the first cohort, which successfully launched earlier this month and more programmes are on the way. The initiative has received strong feedback from both participants and partners, with plans to expand into other industries soon.
If you’re looking to start a career in construction, this course could be your first step.

HOW DOES THIS LIST DEFINE US?
The Government’s latest report on Britain’s most deprived areas makes grim reading for our region.
And for us in North , it shows our city as the fifth neediest area with bordering East and also in the top ten. (See https://lnkd.in/dgQruvSq)
Says the article: “The report is the latest in a long-running series that are used by central and local government and other bodies to target resources for local services.”
We hope that is the case. Previous surveys berating and belittling deprived areas have done absolutely nothing to solve problems there.
Some green shoots are in the report – particularly for Oldham. Here in the likes of us are following their example of putting community first and investing in job creation and campaigns.
