What to do when sitting with a feeling 😇
Notice and identify: Take a moment to identify what you are feeling. Try to label the emotion, whether it's sadness, anger, anxiety, or something else.
Be curious, not judgmental: Approach the feeling with a sense of curiosity. Ask nonjudgmental questions like, "What is this trying to tell me?" or "What do I need right now?".
Locate it in your body: Pay attention to where you feel the emotion in your physical body. Noticing these sensations can help you connect with the feeling without overthinking it.
Allow it to be: Don't try to fight, fix, or push the feeling away. Let yourself simply experience it, understanding that emotions are temporary and will pass.
Be gentle and kind: Practice self-compassion. Remind yourself that it's okay to feel this way, and you don't have to be happy all the time.
Ground yourself: If the feeling is overwhelming, use grounding techniques to stay present. This can include taking deep breaths, pushing your feet into the floor, or naming things you can see.
Why it's important
It helps you grow: Avoiding feelings can be problematic, but facing them allows you to learn from them and make changes that align with your authentic self.
It increases resilience: Regularly practicing this helps you become more resilient and less reactive to uncomfortable emotions over time.
It provides insight: By observing emotions without immediate reaction, you can gain a deeper understanding of what is happening within you.
It promotes healing: Learning to relate to painful emotions with more care and self-compassion can be a powerful step toward healing.
