Shirley Is a qualified therapeutic counsellor and member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP), with a background in teaching. Throughout her career, supporting the well-being of her colleagues, pupils and carers has always been at the core of her work. Shirley is a creative practitioner, who is able to draw from a variety of modalities, to ensure that she provides support that is tailored closely to the client’s needs and feels right for them. She believes that the client is the expert on themselves and that with the right support they will find a positive way forward. This support entails offering a safe, confidential space, without judgement and with full positive regard and warmth. Shirley believes that being invited to step into a client’s world, alongside them, during sessions, and helping them to navigate difficult times or situations, is both a privilege and a responsibility that she values greatly. Shirley is able to support clients with a wide range of issues, including bereavement, loss, anxiety, addictions, trauma and many everyday difficulties that life presents us with. She is currently an approved therapist with Anxiety UK. Shirley is keen to explore holistic therapies and work in a holistic manner when this suits the client best. She is qualified in teaching Mindfulness and finds that the breath work taken from this can provide instant support to a client who may feel overwhelmed in the moment. Shirley has experience of supporting adults, young people, and children in a variety of settings, including schools, clinics and in their own homes. She also works online and via telephone. Her experience also encompasses work with children and adults on the Autistic spectrum, with visual impairments and other additional needs. Shirley was recently described as a warm, gentle person, who prizes her clients and shows that they matter.

A new report claiming children are being “overdiagnosed” with mental health issues and that this risks “undercutting grit and resilience” repeats a tired, misleading narrative.

Like recent comments from Bridget Phillipson and Wes Streeting, it shifts focus away from real action - and ignores the fact that too many children still can’t access the support they need.

Access to a trained, professional counsellor can be life-changing. It gives children a safe space to be heard, to set their own goals, and to begin coping with what they’re facing.
