Remnants from a messy play session.

Because sometimes trauma cannot be verbalised.

Messy play says: I am here. I am with you. I can handle your ‘mess’. Together we can turn mess to form.

This is Toe. He’s been one of my therapy buddies since he was born!

I have been using animals a lot in therapy sessions recently, particularly kittens, and it has been really useful for the following reasons:

1. Improving emotional regulation
2. Sensory play and grounding
3. Understanding safety (relationships / spaces)
4. Understanding trust and non-verbal consent
5. Exploring a playful / nurturing side of their personality
6. The animals can often be metaphors for the client to explore aspects of themselves/ their own experiences

A bit about me:

I qualified as a Dramatherapist in Sep 2020 just before giving birth. Since then I have been working as a freelance Dramatherapist with looked after children, and delivering training and reflective practice to staff in children’s homes, whilst also being a mum of course!

Prior to becoming a Dramatherapist I have a background of being a secondary school drama teacher, and working for a variety of charities/ organisations specialising in sexual abuse and domestic violence. I am also as trustee for a sexual abuse charity.

I love my job and I am passionate about trauma-informed care.
