“Slipped disc” is a phrase we hear all the time… but it’s actually a bit of a myth.
Your spinal discs don’t just slip out of place.
They’re firmly attached between the bones of your spine, with strong ligaments holding everything together (the white round bit in the picture). What can happen, though, is that a disc can bulge (where the big red arrow is pointing to) or become irritated, sometimes pressing on nearby nerves—that’s what leads to pain.
So why does the term “slipped disc” get used?
👉 It’s an easy way to describe back pain
👉 It sounds dramatic (and sticks in people’s minds)
👉 But it doesn’t reflect what’s really going on
Understanding this matters, because the words we use can shape how we feel about our bodies. If you think something has “slipped,” it’s easy to feel fragile or worried about movement.
The reality is your spine is strong, supported, and adaptable.
Most disc-related pain improves with the right approach:
• Keeping gently active (not complete rest)
• Building strength and control around the spine
• Gradually returning to normal movement
At Nene Valley Osteopathy, we focus on helping you understand your body, reduce pain, and rebuild confidence in movement—without fear.
Because your back isn’t broken… it just needs the right support.
Helping you stay strong, injury-free, and pain-free through expert treatment and movement-based coaching.

What a lovely week of (mainly) sunshine we’ve had! Let’s start the weekend off with a giggle at this

We often talk in clinic to people who are suffering with pain from their neck running down their arms, but did you know each nerve from your neck supplies a different portion of arm?
The picture shows what are called Dermatomes. They give us a map of the area supplied by each nerve, and depending on where you’re experiencing your pain, they can indicate which area of neck is a problem.
Like everything in the body, they are not an exact science, and sometimes pain in the arm can be coming from other structures such as internal organs or muscles, but we think they provide a fascinating overview!
Do you get pain that correlates to any of these areas? If you do, drop us a line and ask us how we can help you feel better, quickly!

Scoliosis is often misunderstood, and many people don’t realise how common it actually is.
It’s a condition where the spine curves to the side, sometimes in an “S” or “C” shape. For some people it’s picked up in childhood, but for others it may go unnoticed until adulthood when symptoms begin to appear.
You might experience:
• Ongoing back or neck discomfort
• Uneven shoulders or hips
• Muscle tightness or fatigue on one side
• Reduced movement or stiffness
The important thing to know is that scoliosis doesn’t always mean pain or limitation — but when it does, the right approach can make a big difference.
At Nene Valley Osteopathy, we focus on helping you move better and feel stronger. Treatment may include gentle hands-on therapy to ease tension, alongside simple, tailored exercises to improve strength, balance, and control around the spine.
Every spine is different, which is why your care should be too.
If you’ve been diagnosed with scoliosis, or you’re noticing uneven posture or persistent back discomfort, it’s worth getting checked.
Helping you stay strong, injury-free, and pain-free through expert treatment and movement-based coaching.

Sepsis Awareness
Sepsis has returned to public attention following some recent tragedies. It is particularly concerning because sepsis is easy to miss, especially early on when it can resemble a common illness.
The news this morning brings to mind someone I met after their partner died from sepsis. Their illness appeared to be a mild upper respiratory infection, with no clear warning signs to suggest anything more serious, until they became acutely unwell a few hours later. Their otherwise robust general health was deemed to have masked their symptoms.
And that’s the concern. Early symptoms of sepsis are often non-specific:
Fever or very low temperature
Muscle aches, fatigue, or feeling unwell
Shivering or feeling very cold
Nausea or reduced appetite
On their own, these don’t usually mean sepsis. What matters is deterioration and a sense that something isn’t right.
In the UK, sepsis affects around 245,000 people a year and contributes to around 48,000 deaths, many linked to delayed recognition.
The UK Sepsis Trust has useful resources for both the public and healthcare professionals, including posters and short videos to support recognition and safety netting. It's useful for CPD also.
I'm sharing this to support the UK Sepsis Trust’s work in improving awareness.
Early recognition saves lives.
If someone is deteriorating, not improving as expected, or has a sense that something isn’t right, consider whether it could be sepsis and escalate appropriately.
