Don’t Ignore “Niggles”

That small ache you keep putting up with?

It’s often your body’s early warning system.

Desk Workers: This Is for You

If you sit for most of the day, your body is working harder than you think.

Common issues we see:

• Neck stiffness
• Upper back tightness
• Headaches
• Lower back discomfort

Small changes in posture, movement breaks, and targeted exercises can make a big difference over time.

Your body was built to move — not stay parked all day.

Often it’s not just the shoulder itself, but how the shoulder blade, neck and upper back are moving together.

✅ Simple strengthening work

…can make a big difference to recovery and long-term resilience.

Did you know your menstrual cycle can influence how your body feels during exercise?

Hormone levels naturally rise and fall throughout the month, and that can affect energy, strength, coordination and recovery. Understanding this can help you train smarter, not harder.

🩸 Menstruation
Energy and motivation are often at their lowest. Gentle movement, mobility work, stretching or easy hacks can help reduce stiffness and ease symptoms.

🏃‍♀️ Follicular phase
As oestrogen increases, many people notice improved energy, strength and focus. This can be a great time to progress workouts, build strength, or work on new skills.

🏋️‍♀️ Ovulatory phase
Often a peak phase for power, confidence and performance. Ideal for more demanding sessions, competitions or challenging training — while still listening to your body.

🏊 Luteal phase
Rising progesterone can make exercise feel harder and recovery slower. This is a good time to prioritise technique, steady conditioning, mobility and good recovery habits.

These principles apply just as much to daily activities as they do to the gym — from choosing lighter training at certain times of the month to planning harder training when your body feels more capable.

Every body is different. The key is awareness, flexibility and working with your body rather than against it 🤍

Staying strong, injury-free and pain-free means respecting how your body changes — and adapting your movement accordingly.

Ever wondered how a disc in your spine works?

This illustration explains a key concept in spinal biomechanics—how the intervertebral disc, that sits between the vertebral bones, supports load through hydrostatic pressure, not muscle strength. The disc behaves like a pressurized fluid system sandwiched between two vertebral bodies.

At the center lies the nucleus pulposus, a toothpaste like substance like the jam in the middle of a donut, shown here as a strong, expanding structure. It is rich in water and proteoglycans, allowing it to behave like an incompressible fluid. When load is applied—standing, sitting, or lifting—the nucleus pressurizes and pushes outward in all directions.

Surrounding it is the annulus fibrosus, the dough of a donut, composed of concentric collagen fibres arranged in alternating directions. As the nucleus expands, it tensions these annular fibres evenly, creating a self-stabilizing system that keeps the vertebrae separated and aligned.

The vertebral bodies above and below act like end plates that contain this pressure. Instead of collapsing under load, they are gently pushed apart, allowing the spine to bear weight efficiently while maintaining mobility.

🔍 Why this matters clinically:
With aging, dehydration, or disc degeneration, the nucleus loses water content. This reduces hydrostatic pressure, increasing stress on the annulus and vertebral joints—often leading to disc bulges, herniation, and back pain.

🧠 Key Takeaway:
A healthy disc doesn’t “collapse” under load—it distributes force even

Your body heals best when your mind and movement are working together.

Focusing only on pain can make your muscles tense and your movement more guarded. Shifting your attention to smooth, controlled movement and steady progress often helps your biomechanics feel more natural again.

Mindful movement + thoughtful rehab = stronger, more resilient bodies.

Try this next time pain flares up:

• Take one slow breath
• Notice where you feel it
• Then ask yourself: “What can I do today that supports my body?”

Pairing this mindset with gentle osteopathic treatment and sensible movement work helps sufferers stay calm, consistent, and steadily moving forwards in the right direction.

Here’s a little trivia for a Friday night… our friends at Sweetie Factory have this to say about cocoa flavanoids (a great excuse to eat more chocolate…)

“Chocolate is good for you!

Did you know cocoa flavanols and flavonoids offer significant health benefits, primarily by boosting cardiovascular health, reducing inflammation, and improving cognitive function.

Dark chocolate and raw cacao powder has the most but all chocolate that has cocoa butter in has it.
Forget flapjacks and fruit!! Get some chocolate.

These compounds increase nitric oxide production, which relaxes blood vessels, lowers blood pressure, improves circulation, and supports brain health, including potential mood enhancement and cognitive protection.

Key Health Benefits of Cocoa Flavanols and Flavonoids:
Cardiovascular Health: They reduce blood pressure and improve circulation by increasing nitric oxide levels, which dilates blood vessels. They also help lower "bad" LDL cholesterol and reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack.

Brain Health and Cognitive Function: Flavanols can cross the blood-brain barrier, improving cerebral blood flow and promoting neurogenesis (new brain cell growth) and neuron survival. They are linked to better memory, reduced fatigue, and potential protection against dementia.

Anti-inflammatory and Antioxidant Properties: As strong antioxidants, they combat oxidative stress, which can lower the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes and certain cancers.

Mood Improvement: They may improve mood and reduce depressive symptoms.

Metabolic Support: They may help regulate metabolism, increase insulin sensitivity, and reduce triglyceride levels.

Best Sources:
To maximize benefits, choose products with high cocoa content, such as raw cacao powder or dark chocolate (70-85%+ cocoa), as processed chocolate often contains less of these beneficial compounds.”
