“I’m old, my knees hurt.”

I heard it all night at the Hockley Christmas light switch-on, and I hear it every single week.

But age isn’t the enemy.

Decades of under-using your joints are.

If you’re 30 and left school at 18, you may have stopped loading certain joints 12 years ago.

At 50, that could be 32 years of gradually weakening the muscles that support those joints.

Pain sets in and we blame the 50 years of age… not the 32 years of under-loading.

The thing is…

Weak hips lead to painful knees.

If your rotator cuff is weak, your shoulder will hurt.

If your glutes are weak, your lower back will be in bits.

The pattern repeats itself over and over.

And yet, as coaches, we’re met constantly with:
“I can’t strength train because I hurt… and I’m old.”

What that really means is:

“I’m in pain because my joints have been neglected for years. That will continue and my pain will get worse”

😭

It’s heartbreaking, because it is not your fault.

The concept of “I must not lift” comes from YEARS of misguided advice, years of women being brushed off in medical settings, and years of being told:

“Careful, you’ll hurt yourself.”
“No, love, let someone else do that.”

It’s a consistent and damaging message that women should not exert themselves.

Meanwhile our muscles slowly weaken, and when estrogen drops, your body becomes even more sensitive to that weakness.

When the support system (muscle) shrinks, the joint takes the load… and pain grows.

It’s awful and relentless.

The good news?

You can rebuild that support system at any age.

Whether you’re 45 or 95, strengthening the muscles around your joints can improve pain, stability, confidence, and daily life.

I KNOW it feels daunting to start.

I know it so well I built an entire company around helping women take that first step.

I have dedicated my career to getting women into strength training safely.

We were once the Women’s Weightlifting Club, and now we’ve grown into the Women’s Health Club.

Let’s do something DRASTIC.

I’ve opened my phone to war, murder and abduction news articles this morning.

I don’t know about you but I’m sick of it.

SO here’s some lovely fact-based silliness to cleanse your palette.

Seven of them. No idea why seven. That’s just how many my brain coughed up.

1. A Duck-Billed Platypus is in fact teeny tiny and a lady platy-p may only weigh a kilo 🥺

2. Spiders and frogs, in certain parts of the world have a symbiotic relationship where the frogs get to use the spider’s home and the spiders deter predators. I don’t care about technicalities, as far as I’m concerned spiders have pet frogs.

3. Sea otters hold hands when sleeping so that they don’t drift away. It’s called rafting and all I want in life is to see it.

4. A newborn baby kangaroo (Or just ‘Roo’ according to A A Milne) is the size of a jellybean (but don’t google them they look GROSS)

5. Turtles breathe through their butts… kind of… but I don’t wish to elaborate, because it’s ruins the magic.

6. If we used the same protein-spring mechanism to jump like fleas do, at the size we are, we could jump the length of two buses. Imagine 2am when nightclubs empty; horrific 😂

7. Wombat’s poo is cube-shaped and they go upto ONE HUNDRED times a night. And wait for it… when they’re done they STACK IT. Fantastic.

It’s that time again!

Welcome to my Confession Booth

I have not trained.
I have not prioritised my nutrition.
I have not drunk enough water.

I had three team members tell me to “go home” last week because I am flirting with burnout.

It’s not smart and it’s not clever but the harsh reality is there’s a never ending to do list and we have deadlines (hello Black Friday 👋)

My son did his entire week’s homework, due Monday, on Monday morning, because I had forgotten about it. (Luckily he’s 6 so it was 2 sentences, some vowel sorting and 5 sums)

Then I told him off when he refused to do his reading books. Then I apologised because I was making my lack of organisation his problem. He forgave me.

We forgot he had PE, got him dressed, only to realise AS our foot crossed the driveway … “oh F*** he’s got PE today”… back we go!

We have nothing in the fridge and we keep having to do Tesco Express runs.

My husband and I are routinely partaking in this funny little joke where we pop the clean clothes on the bed, like it’ll incentivise us to put it away before bed, but we just keep sweeping it onto the floor before collapsing, melodramatically, onto the sheets.

Our house is a mess. But it’s actually fine.

Our fridge is… disappointing. But we are fed.

I didn’t hydrate and got a headache. So I downed a pint of water and the headache went away.

Life just ‘lifes’ sometimes.

If one of our members vanishes from the gym and returns multiple weeks later I don’t think “lazy cow” I think “Oh good she’s back!”

Because I KNOW that if someone’s not here and they’ve then clawed back, something was going on for them.

Whether that’s family drama, health drama, burnout… god knows what.

They don’t need to be bombarded with a f-ing lecture on how they must prioritise their health. That ‘busy people’ go to the gym too.

We all have lives and sometimes prioritising your health means just getting through the day.

If you can add onto that, quality food, great hydration and exercise you’re wonderwoman.

Don’t chase perfection.
Don’t chase perfect adherence.
Quit listening to people who do.

You’ll never manage it and then you’ll quit because you took some teeny-bopper’s claim, that “we all have the same 24hours”, at face value.

Stop avoiding doing something good because you can’t do it ALL the time or multiple times a week.

Do it when you can.

Hydrate when you remember.

Stop judging yourself.

We don’t judge you because we’re exactly the same.

You’re human. Keep going. You can do this.

Let me tell you about Dom. He has terminal cancer and he’s 32. We are the same age and so are our boys.

He’s been fundraising for Havens, because that’s just how he is. But there hasn’t been a fundraiser for him, until now.

Dom leaves behind Bex and Fin, his partner and his son. And if you know me, you know I don’t throw around donation-asks lightly. We do a lot of creative fundraising, but this time I’m asking straight-up for your help, because this matters.

Dom’s a local guy, he lives in Hockley. We met as PTs a decade ago. I can’t imagine a nicer human. He would drop everything for anyone, and he does, even now, when he’s terminal.

So let’s do the least we can do for him and his family.

You get it.

Your life is not an Instagram dream.

Your living room is rarely immaculate.

You’re not entirely sure what’s at the bottom of the freezer, could be dinner, could be a body 🤷‍♀️

And yet you’re surrounded by “life advice” made by 22-year-olds in gymshark, who don’t have kids, haven’t lived in their own house yet, and still think a “flush” is a bathroom sound.

Why are you letting them make you feel bad?!

They don’t have a f*ing clue.

Yesterday, I saw a post from a stunning young woman with a 6-pack telling us we all have time to chase the dream bod.

*Cries in after school clubs, full time job and washing*

I’m sure she also swears she’ll never let her future children eat processed food.

👀

These women online, the ones with the tiny waists, spotless homes, and colour-coded ‘pantries’, cannot help YOU.

YOU, the perimenopausal woman who eyes a “beauty blender” with DEEP suspicion (how DO we clean them?), has a dishwasher that’s waiting to be unloaded, and a brain that’s juggling 27 open tabs.



Here’s the thing.

When you feel bad about yourself…

Do you leap off the sofa shouting, “I’m saved!” and sprint to the gym?

No.

You buy chocolate.

Because chocolate judges no one. (Thank God)

But if you feel stuck and want something to change, you need people who don’t judge you.

Influencers who don’t demand perfection.

Social media that reflects real life.

If you want to start having a positive impact on your life you HAVE to remember, you are wonderful.

You’re tired.
Your house looks like a state.
You’re still wonderful.

You are doing an INCREDIBLE job and you’re not alone in how you feel.

Some people are going to HATE this post.

💥 GYMS SHOULD NOT POST BEFORE & AFTER PICTURES 🙊

And this is coming from someone who used to post them … a lot.

But years down the line, I’ve realised something that makes my skin crawl.

Even though before-and-after photos can be brilliant for the client…

…it’s no longer ethical for the gym to post them.

Because here’s the truth:

📸 Posting other people in their underwear, consensually or not, for commercial profit should never have been normalised.

If a client chooses to share their own photos and tag us? Fantastic.

That’s their choice. Their power.

But when the gym posts them?

Let’s play the tape forward 👇

A woman completes a transformation challenge. She feels incredible; proud, empowered, finally seeing her effort in pictures.

Her before-and-after goes up on the gym’s feed.

Everyone cheers, she gets all the love! Yay!

But what could go wrong?

Maybe she gets a new job… and a quick social media check pulls up her underwear photo.

Maybe her kid’s classmates find it and use it for bullying ammo.

Maybe pervy Steve in the office saves it to his phone.

Grim.

And what if she just changes her mind later?

What if she doesn’t want those photos online anymore?

By that point, the damage is done.

It’s out there. Screenshotted. Shared. Archived.

Even if the gym tries to remove it, the control is gone.

And let’s be honest, what if they don’t try?

What if they miss the message, or can’t find the file, or just… say ‘no’?

If a gym posts a client’s before-and-after, that client loses all control.

Of who sees it. Of where it goes. Of how long it lasts.

That’s not empowerment, that’s exposure.

And beyond all that?

Before-and-after culture quietly tells women that smaller means better.

That “before” is shameful and “after” is worthy.

We don’t buy that here.

Our clients take before-and-afters for themselves, as a tool for reflection, not as marketing currency.

Because they’re not ours to share.

They never were.
