Your life is not an Instagram dream.

Yesterday, I saw a post from a stunning young woman with a 6-pack telling us we all have time to chase the dream bod.

*Cries in after school clubs, full time job and washing*

I’m sure she also swears she’ll never let her future children eat processed food.

These women online, the ones with the tiny waists, spotless homes, and colour-coded ‘pantries’, cannot help YOU.

YOU, the perimenopausal woman who eyes a “beauty blender” with DEEP suspicion (how DO we clean them?), has a dishwasher that’s waiting to be unloaded, and a brain that’s juggling 27 open tabs.



Here’s the thing.

When you feel bad about yourself…

Do you leap off the sofa shouting, “I’m saved!” and sprint to the gym?

No.

You buy chocolate.

Because chocolate judges no one. (Thank God)

But if you feel stuck and want something to change, you need people who don’t judge you.

Influencers who don’t demand perfection.

Social media that reflects real life.

If you want to start having a positive impact on your life you HAVE to remember, you are wonderful.

You’re tired.

Some people are going to HATE this post.

💥 GYMS SHOULD NOT POST BEFORE & AFTER PICTURES 🙊

And this is coming from someone who used to post them … a lot.

But years down the line, I’ve realised something that makes my skin crawl.

Even though before-and-after photos can be brilliant for the client…

…it’s no longer ethical for the gym to post them.

Because here’s the truth:

📸 Posting other people in their underwear, consensually or not, for commercial profit should never have been normalised.

If a client chooses to share their own photos and tag us? Fantastic.

That’s their choice. Their power.

But when the gym posts them?

Let’s play the tape forward 👇

A woman completes a transformation challenge. She feels incredible; proud, empowered, finally seeing her effort in pictures.

Her before-and-after goes up on the gym’s feed.

Everyone cheers, she gets all the love! Yay!

But what could go wrong?

Maybe she gets a new job… and a quick social media check pulls up her underwear photo.

Maybe her kid’s classmates find it and use it for bullying ammo.

Maybe pervy Steve in the office saves it to his phone.

Grim.

And what if she just changes her mind later?

What if she doesn’t want those photos online anymore?

By that point, the damage is done.

It’s out there. Screenshotted. Shared. Archived.

Even if the gym tries to remove it, the control is gone.

And let’s be honest, what if they don’t try?

What if they miss the message, or can’t find the file, or just… say ‘no’?

If a gym posts a client’s before-and-after, that client loses all control.

Of who sees it. Of where it goes. Of how long it lasts.

That’s not empowerment, that’s exposure.

And beyond all that?

Before-and-after culture quietly tells women that smaller means better.

That “before” is shameful and “after” is worthy.

We don’t buy that here.

Our clients take before-and-afters for themselves, as a tool for reflection, not as marketing currency.

Because they’re not ours to share.

They never were.

It’s not his fault, he’s tried nose clips, nose strips, mouth strips and he has a sleep clinic appointment in 2026.

The irony of me telling everyone yesterday “sLeEp Is SuPeR iMpOrTaNt” 😑

I went to bed at an appropriate time.

I followed my sleep hygiene rules.

We’re rebranding.

For almost 2 years, we’ve been The Women’s Weightlifting Club; a name I’ve loved (and still do!).

Since 2023, we’ve grown from a small studio…
to a small gym…

…to a proper gym, with a proper studio, and now…

💪 A full gym
🏋️‍♀️ A dedicated weightlifting studio
💃 A (new) large class studio
💆‍♀️ A massage & treatment suite

We’re not just about weightlifting anymore.

Now we have dance, Pilates, cardio classes & equipment, bootcamps, HIIT, and so much more.

We’ve evolved, and our brand needs to evolve too.

The Women’s Weightlifting Club will absolutely still exist.

She’s a huge part of what we do and too special to let go.

She’ll proudly live on through our Peri & Menopause Groups, Sculpt Sessions, Workshops and Lifting Programmes.

But… we’ve outgrown being only a weightlifting club.

We need a name that ties everything together.

The gym, the studios, the massage suite, and our online coaching.

My full name is Madeleine Marie Smith (and no offence, but “Smith” is a bit… sh**).

So, back in 2017, when I started this page, I used just ‘Madeleine Marie’; simple, recognisable, and quite pretty (thanks mum).

It’s time to bring her back.

A name that embraces everything we do.

If you see the Madeleine Marie mark you’ll know it’s us; trusted, female-first, and made deliberately for you.

I’m excited, nervous and a tad daunted by this next chapter, but what a chapter it’s going to be.

So here’s to The Women’s Health Club, to The Women’s Weightlifting Club, and to every one of you who’s made this happen.

I never, ever thought we’d get here and it’s all down to you. 🤍

Why do some women grow VISIBLE muscle and some don’t? Even when they’re both lifting 3x a week?

Let’s break it down 👇

🔥🔥🔥🔥

☝️ Training Intensity

I’ve been told I train “too hard” by people who’ve just never seen what really hard training looks like.

Training isn’t the same for everyone, because it depends on what you want.

If you’re lifting weights to the point where you think, “Ooh that feels heavy,” but you can still chat through your set?

Yes, you’ll boost your quality of life. Your bones, joints and mobility will all thank you.

But huge visible changes? Nope. You won’t look that different.

And good! Not everyone wants to look different.

But everyone should want to feel different and live longer.

If you want OBVIOUS muscle, though?

You need to train in a way that makes you sit in a puddle of sweat, screw up your face, and lose the ability to talk mid-set.

Your training should require you to utter MANY swears and demand that you must “take a minute” 🥵

And when it gets easier, you go heavier. Always.

If you ever think, “Oh, that felt pretty comfortable,” that’s your cue to push harder, not stay there feeling sweet relief!

✌️ Food

If you under-eat, you won’t grow visible muscle.

If your protein and fibre suck, you won’t grow visible muscle.

If prosecco is your main food group, you won’t grow visible muscle.

If you under-fuel on carbs, you won’t have the energy to even build muscle.

And no, we’re not going into “you need to lose weight to reveal muscle and a six-pack” territory.

⛔️ There’s no room for that mindset here.

You need to eat like a machine.

Fuel deliberately. Hydrate properly.

And if you’re pushing your body that hard? Cut the alcohol, vapes, and ci******es.

If you’re serious about growing visible muscle, look after every engine in your body.

🙌 Sleep & Stress Management

Muscle grows between sessions.

If you’re running on 5 hours a night and doom-scrolling at 4 a.m., your results will wither.

You’re superwoman, but you’re not superhuman! And that’s a tough pill to swallow.

You need looking after. You need rest. You need to stop putting everyone else first.

In the world of growing proper shoulders and legs, people-pleasers don’t win prizes.

If you need a reason to say no, tell them:

“Maddie said if I say yes, my biceps will shrink.”

And if your anxiety is off the charts, get support.

Don’t keep carrying that load; you’re worth the work it takes to manage your stress.



That was a word-vomit and a half, but it paints the picture.

This is why not everyone ends up looking jacked!

And why, if you’re worried about getting “too muscular”… you really don’t need to be. It won’t sneak up on you.

Yes, you’ll feel incredible when you lift…

But if you want to LOOK like you lift, you’ve got to train deliberately, eat properly, and live effectively.

The kind of shoulders that make you look powerful.

Yes, we know the health benefits; we know lifting’s great for our bones, our joints, our hearts… all of it.

But also, there’s something stunningly majestic about a STRONG looking woman.

The kind of woman that could carry someone out of a burning building if she wanted to.

It’s my son’s birthday today.

He’s 6 🤯

6 years ago at 6 minutes past midnight I had a C-Section.

I still remember it to this day; I’d gone into shock, was projectile vomiting on every contraction and had been yoinked into the operating theatre.

I was TERRIFIED.

The angel of a midwife held me still because of my shakes and they put the injection in my spine and everything went calm.

The doors burst open and I heard a majestic yell “HELLO! MY NAME IS DOCTOR HAPPINESS AND I AM HERE TO DELIVER YOUR BABY”

I turned to my husband “Did I just hallucinate that?” He laughed and said “no” 😂

The op was FAST and someone said “it’s a boy!” (So exciting) and asked if we wanted to see him?

YES!

They held him over the divider and my reaction was not love but “ew” 😂

He looked like an alien 👽

Before I knew it he was plonked on my chest and that was that!

A mum!

He cried a lot at home. A LOT. A LOT A LOT.

He fed CONSTANTLY.

And never wanted to be put down.

I didn’t love the early years and I desperately wanted to see him walk, hear him talk, find out what was going on in his little brain.

Turns out he follows me everywhere, never stops talking and MY GOD he has many MANY opinions.

I watched myself develop the “mum SHRIEK” whenever he fell over or was about to do something insanely stupid. Something my husband found hysterical.

I watched myself break most parenting rules I had insisted mattered before being a mum.

I watched myself oscillate between utter exhaustion and endless enthusiasm when Harry did his “first” anything.

This child wakes at the crack of dawn. He is responsible for many a sleepless night. He has had me calmly exit a room and scream noiselessly into the void.

He is also responsible for the absolute best years of my life. He has brought me so much joy that I didn’t ever think was possible. I would not change him for anything.

He is funny and smart and a pain in my backside.

And cheers to us for not garroting them within the first 6 years at least.

I must go now, I can hear him yelling in frustration because his stickers won’t stick.

Love him.

It’s because you are missing nutrients.
