Hi Everyone,
We have some rather sad news to share with you about Prince.

My Wife took Prince to see the ophthalmic veterinary specialist in Newmarket on Tuesday for his operation. As part of his pre op procedure, they detected that although he did have cataracts, he also had progressive retinal atrophy.

This is a disease that destroys the light-sensitive area at the back of the eye that enables dogs (and us) to see. It is likely that this was hereditary and although an "ordinary" vet could diagnose cataracts, it is extremely unlikely that without specific ophthalmic training and equipment they would have been able to detect the retinal atrophy.

Unfortunately, the disease is inoperable and what little sight he now has will disappear in a short period.

Obviously, we were very upset to hear this, as we were really looking forward to helping him discover the world afresh with his "new vision".

Prince is an incredibly loving dog and even the Ophthalmic specialist was surprised how calm and gentle he was with his deteriorating sight and whilst we adopted him from Labrador rescue on the basis that we would be able to restore his vision, we have fallen in love with him and my wife and I will continue to care for him as his life takes a different path from the one that we were expecting.

Looking after a blind dog comes with lots of different challenges but that doesn't mean that we can't work with him to build his confidence and help him live out his final years in a loving and caring home.

We will continue to bring you updates on Prince and his journey and thank you all so much for your kind messages.

Introducing Prince........😍

Prince is a rescue Labrador from the charity. He is 11 years old, going on 3. Myself (Stephen, the manager of our Rayleigh Branch) and my wife have rescued a number of older Labradors over recent years, and whilst the time we spend with them is inevitably short, it's incredibly rewarding to be able to make the final years of their lives comfortable and full of love.

Prince has loads of energy and is very affectionate, but unfortunately has cataracts in both eyes and only has about 10% vision left, which is continuing to deteriorate. This makes him anxious around other dogs and humans that he doesn't know. He is hopefully being operated on at the end of September, and my wife and I will then take him through the postoperative care journey, where hopefully most of his vision will be restored.

You can see why we had to rehome him.

For us as opticians, Prince’s story really hits home. We see every day how much of a difference good eyesight makes to people’s lives, and it’s the same for him. Whether it’s a person or a pet, being able to see clearly changes everything; it gives confidence, independence, and just makes life that bit brighter.

We will update you as soon as we can.

Please note that all images have been captured on Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses with prescription lenses. My wife Stephanie and I will be using these to chart Prince’s progress in the coming weeks.
