๐Ÿ’œJo Watkins, Speech and Language Therapist๐Ÿ’™

We are absolutely delighted to have welcomed Jo into our team recently!

Jo qualified with a first-class masterโ€™s degree in Speech and Language Therapy from the University of Essex. After making the transition from a successful career as a primary school teacher, Jo brings a deep understanding and experience of communication, learning and the importance of social connection to her therapeutic practice.
Jo is passionate about helping children and adults develop their communication skills in order to live rich and happy lives. She has special interests in childrenโ€™s speech sound disorders, autism and developmental language disorder. During her training at the University of Essex, Jo has worked in a variety of school settings, both mainstream and specialist, to support children with their speech and language skills.
Jo also has a keen interest in therapy with adults following stroke and brain injury. During placements she has gained valuable experience working with adults, through online support sessions and intensive aphasia programmes, to develop their communication skills and re-establish social connections. Her person-centred approach, combined with evidence-based practice, enables individuals to rebuild confidence in their communication.
Empathetic and committed to lifelong learning, Jo is dedicated to helping individuals of all ages communicate more effectively and live rich, fulfilling lives.

We are so thrilled that Jo is now part of our growing team! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’œ

๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œDLD Awareness Day ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ

Letโ€™s talk about Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).

DLD affects around 1 in 14 people - thatโ€™s 2 children in every class of 30! However, itโ€™s often hidden, misunderstood and a lot of people donโ€™t even know it exists in our experience.

Children and adults with DLD have persistent difficulties understanding and/or using language that impact everyday communication, learning, and relationships.

According to the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) and the CATALISE consensus, DLD is diagnosed when:
๐Ÿ’œ Language difficulties cause a functional impact on daily life.
๐Ÿ’œ These difficulties are persistent (unlikely to or havenโ€™t resolved by age 5)
๐Ÿ’œ They are not due to another known biomedical condition (like hearing loss, autism or learning disability)

Itโ€™s important to remember:
๐Ÿ’ฌ DLD can occur with other difficulties like ADHD or dyslexia
๐Ÿง  Nonverbal IQ does not exclude a DLD diagnosis
๐ŸŒฑ Early support and understanding make a huge difference

Letโ€™s make sure every child and adult has the chance to be understood and to thrive with the right support๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ

๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’™ A BIG welcome to Amy! ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’™

This term has been flying by but we've had the absolute privilege of welcoming Amy Knight, Speech and Language Therapist to our growing team!

Amy graduated with a Bachelorโ€™s degree with Honours in Speech and Language Therapy from City St Georges, University of London. During her training, she worked in a variety of settings, including early years clinics, primary and secondary schools, and a specialist complex needs school. These experiences gave her the opportunity to support children with a wide range of speech, language, and communication needs.

Additionally, Amy has experience working in a childrenโ€™s hospice, where she supported children and young adults with a wide range of complex medical and communication needs. In this role, she gained valuable experience in both communication and feeding, working closely with families and multidisciplinary teams to provide holistic, compassionate care. This experience deepened her skills in tailoring therapy for children with complex conditions and strengthened her commitment to making a meaningful difference in their daily lives.

Amy particularly enjoys working alongside families, teachers, and other professionals to make therapy fun, engaging, and tailored to each child. She is passionate about helping children build their confidence and reach their full communication potential, and she brings warmth and creativity to every session.

We are so thrilled to have Amy join our team! ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’™

11/10/2025

In a 2024 YouGov survey, over 1,000 primary and secondary school teachers were asked: How much do you know about Developmental Language Disorder?

Nearly 75% knew very little or nothing at all.

Ahead of next Friday, we want to change this.

We know that with the right training, teachers can identify and offer vital support to thousands of children with lifelong speech and language challenges, who would otherwise be misunderstood or left behind.

That's why we're thrilled to be offering our free DLD webinar for educators!๐ŸŒŸ
๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Wednesday, 15 October | ๐Ÿ• 3:30pm-4:15pm

Join the movement and help raise awareness of the 2 in 30 children affected by DLD.

Back to uni! ๐ŸŽ“โœจ

Last week I started my Masters in Senior Leadership in Healthcare at Exeter University. Itโ€™s something Iโ€™ve wanted to do for such a long time, and with encouragement from hubby, friends and colleagues, I realised thereโ€™s never a โ€œperfectโ€ timeโ€ฆso I took the leap and applied (and got in!). ๐Ÿ™Œ

Week one has already filled me with inspiration and fresh ideas to bring back to our team. Iโ€™m back home now ready to complete the remote learning and the first assignments Iโ€™ve done in 10 years, around my clinical practice. Iโ€™m super excited! ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’™

October is Selective Mutism Awareness month.

Selective Mutism is an anxiety disorder where a person is unable to speak in certain social situations.

It usually starts in childhood and, if left untreated, can persist into adulthood.

A child with SM does not refuse or choose not to speak, their phobia means they โ€˜freezeโ€™ and their words will not come out.

At Clarity, we can provide assessment, education and therapy for Selective Mutism supported by our specialist team, in clinic and within other settings such as school. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’œ

A day out in London today for me with some CPD at UCLโ€™s Better Conversations conference.

It was a great opportunity to learn from other therapists and explore and refresh on approaches to supporting my adult clients with stroke, progressive neurological conditions and brain injury. Bringing back new ideas and inspiration! ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’™

Castlepoint Independent Speech and Language Therapy

I am Amy Williams, a practising Speech and Language Therapist, specialising in swallowing and communication difficulties following a neurological event such as a stroke or brain injury. I also work within elderly care and with clients with dementia. I have a special interest in child speech disorders too.

I have been working as a Speech and Language Therapist for 13 years within the NHS and independently.

I offer comprehensive assessment and treatment of acquired neurological speech and language impairments such as aphasia, cognitive communication difficulties, dysarthria, apraxia of speech and paediatric speech disorders/delay. I can provide regular therapy, if required and appropriate and can include activities that the client can do in their own time or with family and/or carers.

I am also able to offer adult dysphagia (swallowing) assessments within a client's own home or care home and can develop an appropriate care plan from my bedside assessment, including liaising with other key professionals involved in the client's care and providing training to family and carers. This includes assessment for clients who may be approaching the end of their life.
