I applaud you Guy 👏
When I sowed my first leeks 40 years ago, they were the best, the freshest, and also some of the cheapest around. Our co-owner council frequently asks why our prices have risen relative to supermarkets over the years. Part of the answer is that, collectively, we’re not as mean and penny-pinching as I was in the early years (something imbibed from a father who was always on the verge of bankruptcy and happy to share it).
I built a business, but it was not humanly or environmentally sustainable. Today, we pay the Real Living Wage, and have far better employment rights, conditions, training, and development, making co-owners much safer and happier. Most deliveries are electric. We only buy green electricity. We farm for the long term, not the quickest return. And, crucially, we don’t squeeze our suppliers and always buy what we said we would, even if we have to sell at a loss.
I’m proud of the fact that Riverford is a Real Living Wage (RLW) employer, but in just the last year, the RLW has risen by 6.7%. It’s an enormous cost, but the only way if you want no part in the exploitative practices that prop up our food and farming industries (61% of British farmers are now on the verge of quitting). Almost invariably, when there is a choice between ethics and profit, we make the ethical choice. When we ask you what matters most, the answer is reassuringly clear: keep the quality high, keep delivery free, and pay growers fairly. So that’s what we’re protecting.
Some prices are going up. Our largest fruit & veg box will stay the same price, and our boxes are still the best value way to shop with us – after 40 years as a veg box business, they remain the beating heart of Riverford. Delivery will continue to be free. If you are building your own order, the minimum spend will increase to £20, the first change in more than a decade.
Because we’re 100% employee-owned, any profit we make doesn’t go into the pockets of distant shareholders; it goes straight to those who grow, pick, pack, and deliver your veg. The rest is reinvested back into the business to help us cut costs in the long term, and continue doing things right, for people and planet. With your support, we remain determined to stay as competitive as an honest adherence to our ethics allows.
