NHS screening uses a highly effective test to check for high-risk HPV, which can
cause abnormal cells to develop in the cervix. These abnormal cells can, over time,
turn into cancer if left untreated. The test takes less than 5 minutes, and the whole
appointment is usually 10 minutes.
Shreya, 29, from East Berkshire, has attended her cervical screenings since being
invited at 25. After her latest screening showed borderline changes, she underwent
further tests. “A few minutes of discomfort is worth the peace of mind,” says Shreya. “Cervical cancer runs in my family, so it’s important for me to stay on top of my health. My latest screening led to a biopsy, which thankfully ruled out cancer. I’ll now be screened every three years. “While I’ve been lucky, the idea that it could’ve been cancer—and I wouldn’t have known if I didn’t get screened—is scary. I’d encourage everyone who qualifies to take up the offer. It’s so quick, and your health is worth those few minutes.”
