Letting go of resentment is hard because it feels like you are letting the person who wronged you walk free. The irony is that this resentment keeps you in a cage. Letting go is so freeing.

No-one likes dealing with uncomfortable emotions. Mostly, because we find them shameful or scary or just unpleasant. It’s easier to repress our emotions.

However, I want to make the case for being more honest with yourself about how you’re feeling. Journal about your emotions, talk about them with someone else, analyze their source or wallow. Because there is no emotion to be embarrassed or scared of. You are human. All humans experience a wide array of emotions and reactions to things. I can guarantee that whatever you are feeling, millions of people have felt it for thousands of years before you have. Be brave and face your emotions - it is the most efficient way to move past them. And you may even learn a thing or two in the process.

What helps you to deal with your emotions?

There are many types of cognitive distortions that CBT aims to correct. Let’s take someone with social anxiety as an example. Before going to a social event, they might get anxious because:

🖤 they believe how they behave at this event and what people think of them is very important and they will not be able to redeem themselves if it goes badly (magnifying the issue)

🖤 they worry that they will be socially awkward, embarrass themselves or people will judge them (jumping to the worst conclusions)

🖤 Once at the event, they are so focused on what could go/is going wrong that they don’t notice all the things going right (ignoring the positive)

Cognitive distortions are ways of thinking that distort our reality for the worse. They are often at the root of mental health issues and can affect people’s mood, decisions and relationships with others.

It seems counter-intuitive but sometimes listening to sad music when you feel down can help. Sad music helps you wallow and sometimes the only way to get over an emotion is to go through it.

If that doesn’t work, try switching it up with some happy music even if you don’t feel like it. You might even find it hard to stay stuck in a bad mood and end up dancing instead!

How do you find purpose? Because purpose is what drives us to get out of bed every morning.

Some people throw themselves into a career. Other people feel a bit lost in that department, never quite finding a job that fulfills their passions. However, your career doesn’t have to be the main aspect of your life giving you purpose. You can gain meaning from hobbies, caring for family, having fun with friends, doing charity work, the list goes on!

What gives you purpose? ✨ Comment below 👇

Going through a panic attack can be terrifying. Watching someone go through a panic attack can make you feel utterly helpless.

Whilst it is limited what you can do and sometimes people just need to ride panic attacks out, you can act as a support in several ways.

The main things to remember are to stay calm, encourage the person to take slow, deep breaths, reassure them that this is just a bad feeling that will pass, and try to ground them in the present moment. That might mean encouraging them to stomp their feet on the ground, do the 5 senses technique with them, or take them on a walk outside.

Try not to ask too many questions. Remember the person is feeling overwhelmed already!

Writing a summary of your past, present and future puts you in the driving seat of your own narrative. It reminds you of of your strength in all the challenges you’ve overcome and gives you clarity on who you want to be in the future.
