Did you know? NHS Pharmacy First can help you get care quickly 💊

Your local pharmacy can now assess and treat a range of common conditions — no GP appointment needed.

Pharmacy First can help with:
• Sore throat
• Sinusitis
• Earache in children
• Infected insect bites
• Impetigo
• Shingles
• Urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women

Pharmacists are highly trained healthcare professionals and can provide advice, treatment and NHS-funded medication where appropriate.

If you’re unsure where to go, visit your local pharmacy first — it could save you time and help you feel better sooner.

Hay fever season is here, but there are simple ways to manage your symptoms and stay comfortable.

Try to keep windows closed during high pollen days, shower and change clothes after being outdoors and avoid drying clothes outside when pollen counts are high.

If you are struggling with symptoms, your local pharmacist can help. You do not need an appointment and they can offer advice, antihistamines, nasal sprays and other treatments to help you feel better.

Pharmacy first means quicker access to care and support when you need it.

If you are aged 40 or over, it’s important to check your blood pressure regularly.

High blood pressure often has no symptoms, but it can increase your risk of serious conditions like heart disease and stroke.

You can check your blood pressure:
• at home
• at your local pharmacy
• at your GP practice

If you’ve taken a reading outside the practice, please share your results with us so we can keep your records up to date and support your care.

Please do not bring sharps or medication into the surgery.

For health and safety reasons and due to strict regulations, we are unable to accept items such as injection pens or blood thinners.

Sharps and clinical waste must be disposed of safely through your local council.

If you need to arrange disposal, please contact Reading Borough Council or Wokingham Borough Council for support.

Thank you for helping us keep everyone safe.

Prostate cancer often has no symptoms at first, but early detection can make a real difference.

If you notice changes such as difficulty peeing, needing to go more often, or blood in your urine, please speak to your GP.

You may be at higher risk if you are over 50, from a Black ethnic background or have a family history of prostate cancer.

Getting checked is quick and could save your life.

Working together to support our most vulnerable patients 💙

Recently, our team at Melrose Surgery brought together a range of local services for a multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting. We talked about how we can better support vulnerable patients, especially those experiencing homelessness or accessing substance misuse services.

We explored simple, practical ways to make care easier to access. This includes offering more flexible drop in sessions for patients who may find it difficult to book or attend appointments, as well as targeted clinics such as flu clinics.

By working closely with other services, we can help remove barriers and make sure everyone in our community can get the care they need.

Thank you to everyone involved for your time, ideas and continued support for our patients 💙

Know the symptoms of bowel cancer.

Changes in your bowel habits, blood in your poo, tummy pain or ongoing bloating should not be ignored.

If you have any symptoms for 3 weeks or more, please contact your GP.

Most symptoms are caused by other conditions, but it’s important to get checked. Finding cancer early can make it easier to treat.
