When a child is struggling, it can affect the whole family 💚

Occupational Therapy isn’t just about one skill or one challenge. It’s about helping children feel more confident, independent, and regulated in their everyday lives – at home, at school, and out in the community.

Our Occupational Therapists can support with things like:
🟢 Sensory needs and emotional regulation
🟢 Fine and gross motor skills
🟢 Daily routines such as dressing, eating, and bedtime
🟢 School-based challenges, focus, and participation
🟢 Building independence and confidence

When children are supported in the right way, families often notice calmer routines, fewer daily struggles, and more confidence all round.

At Liverpool Occupational Therapy Services, we work closely with families to understand each child’s unique needs and provide practical, realistic strategies that fit into everyday life.

If you’re wondering whether Occupational Therapy could help your child, and your family, we’re here to talk.

Wednesday Win 🎉

Last week a Teaching Assistant attended Ashleigh's Year 6 handwriting group and commented on how much she has noticed the improvement in the pupils who attend. Their writing is more legible and the children enjoy the time working with Ashleigh.

One of the children said, "I like how this group helps my handwriting" ✍️

Sometimes parents aren’t sure when to reach out for Occupational Therapy support.

Here are a few signs we often look for:
✍️ Finds handwriting tiring or avoids it
🤾🏼‍♀️ Struggles with coordination (e.g. tripping, dropping things, avoiding playground equipment)
👚 Dislikes messy textures or clothes that feel “funny”
😣 Difficulty focusing for more than a few minutes
🪥 Avoids self-care tasks like brushing teeth or getting dressed

If this sounds familiar, feel free to get in touch for a conversation - https://manchester-occupational-therapy-services.co.uk/contact-lots/

When schools and home work together, children benefit the most 💚

Children thrive when the adults around them are on the same page. Consistency between school and home helps children feel secure, understood, and supported – especially when they have additional needs.

At Liverpool Occupational Therapy Services, we work closely with schools, parents, and carers to share strategies that can be used across both settings. We offer in-school training for all members of staff so that strategies can be used to support multiple children in the school environment.

By working together, we can create supportive environments that help children succeed not just at school, but in everyday life too.

If you’re a parent or a school looking for joined-up support, our team is here to help.

Today, Kerry spent time working with a child on a fine motor activity using peg board patterns 🧩

Activities like this are a great way to support:
✋ Hand strength and grasp development
👀 Visual skills such as noticing patterns and shapes
↔️ Coordination as children reach across their body and use both hands together

Most importantly, it’s fun, engaging, and motivating, which helps children stay focused while building important skills through play.

These small moments of success add up, supporting confidence and independence in everyday tasks 💚

During the colder months, children often spend more time indoors, with fewer opportunities to move their bodies freely. However, movement remains essential for development, regulation, and wellbeing.

Activities such as jumping, climbing, balancing, crawling, and running help to build strength, coordination, body awareness, and confidence. Movement also supports attention, emotional regulation, and readiness for learning – particularly important when routines change after Christmas and outdoor play is reduced.

Simple ways to encourage movement at home this winter include:
- Creating indoor obstacle courses with cushions and furniture
- Dancing to music or playing movement games
- Short movement breaks throughout the day rather than long periods of sitting

If you have concerns about your child’s balance, coordination, or overall movement skills, our team at Liverpool Occupational Therapy Services can help. We offer Praxis and Motor Skills Assessments and tailored strategies to support children at home and school.

We loved hearing and working alongside Ashleigh's friend from Sheffield Hallam University

"I’m on the same course as Ashleigh at university, and after chatting with her about her role as an Occupational Therapy apprentice at Liverpool Occupational Therapy Services, I was really interested, as it sounded so different from my current role as an OT apprentice in the council.

I asked if I could shadow her for the day, and I’m so glad I did. I loved seeing the interventions in real life, especially the handwriting work using the Speed Up! Handwriting guidelines, as well as the fun activities used to support children’s fine motor skills and balance.

We loved hearing and working alongside Ashleigh's friend from Sheffield Hallam University.er. Thanks so much, Ashleigh 😊"

Fine motor skills play a big role in everyday tasks like handwriting, dressing, using cutlery, and playing. One simple way to support these skills at home is through play-based games.

Try this - 🧺 Peg Pick-Up Game
Use clothes pegs to pick up small items (like socks, paper, or cards) and clip them onto the side of a box or bowl. This helps build finger strength, coordination, and control - all essential for school and daily life.

If you’re noticing your child finds fine motor tasks tricky, our Occupational Therapists can help. We offer assessments and practical strategies to support fine motor development and build confidence at home and school.

January can be a time when concerns about your child’s development feel more noticeable 💚
A new term, new routines, and new expectations can bring questions about what support might help.

Our Ask the OT sessions give you a full hour with one of our Occupational Therapists to talk things through, ask questions, and gain practical strategies you can start using straight away at home.

You might want support with:
Sensory needs
Motor skills and coordination
Daily routines and independence
Emotional regulation
School-based challenges

Sessions take place at our Liverpool clinic (L14 5NX) or online via TEAMS, and you’re very welcome to bring your child along if that feels helpful.

Cost: £75

If you’d like to book a session or find out more, get in touch with us here - https://manchester-occupational-therapy-services.co.uk/contact-lots/
