Walking in the water.... the buoyancy and support of the water gives many people the opportunity to walk when they would otherwise find it too challenging on land due to pain (e.g. from arthritis, joint injuries, or orthopaedic surgery), co-ordination, balance and/or strength difficulties (e.g. with developmental or neurological conditions).

We can provide physical support and/or equipment to make this achievable in the pool for lots of clients who are keen to try. The pool is sloped to allow us to work at a depth that suits your needs.

There are multiple benefits of hydrotherapy / aquatic physiotherapy, and these will vary from person to person.

We will ask what the goals /aims are for each client, as then we can then tailor sessions towards the individual's targets.

If you aren't sure what you might achieve in hydrotherapy, our physiotherapists will let you know what is realistic and can make some suggestions.

Our sessions are physiotherapy led. However, we have a holistic approach, and we appreciate the wider benefits gained from aquatic based exercise, too. Such as relaxation, improvement in mental health, enjoyment/fun, and importance of participation in a social and physical activity.

ATACP (Aquatic Therapy Association of Chartered Physiotherapists) guidelines recommend that hydrotherapy pools be maintained at a temperature between 32-35.5°C (90-96°F). Ideally, they should be kept at a thermoneutral temperature of 34.5-35.5°C (94-96°F). This temperature range helps to relax muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, and promote joint range of movement. 

The pool at LHAP is closely monitored to maintain the optimum temperature. It will feel much warmer than leisure swimming pools, but not too warm to exercise effectively either.

At LHAP, we assess and treat children as well as adults. Our Physiotherapists have experience treating all age groups, as well as a wide range of clinical specialities.

We aim to make therapy fun and engaging, especially for younger clients. We are happy to sing and play! We will tailor sessions to suit children's interests and abilities.

Another option to access the pool - our pool chair and hoist. For clients able to do a transfer from wheelchair to chair or for mobile clients who may not manage the steps for any reason. This is an easy, safe, and efficient option to enter and exit the pool. The chairs are on wheels and can be moved from the changing rooms to the hoist, simply connected, and then the client is lowered straight into the lovely warm water.

We also have a ceiling track hoist system that goes directly from two changing rooms straight into the pool as another option (photos to follow).

For children in Reception to Year 2.

Activities and games will be focused around fine & gross motor skill development, core stability, balance, ball skills and co-ordination.
