A question I was recently asked is does my monthly training plan include functional training. The word “functional” is all the buzz right now in the fitness and wellness world.

Functional training is a term used to describe exercises that help you perform activities in everyday life more easily.

Movement that takes your joints through their full range of motion and engages the stabilising muscles.

This is what I teach. Call it functional training, functional yoga, dynamic vinyasa yoga flow, breathing exercises, the science of yoga, kettlebells, strength training, flexibility coaching, mobility training, stability ball, yoga trapeze, amongst many other disciplines I have trained in over 30 years. A Multidisciplinary approach to overall health and fitness.

Over many years as a personal trainer and Yoga Teacher I have often seen people stick to one method of training leading to repetitive injuries. Motivation also soon fades when boredom sets in and many go back to the bad habits they were trying to change. I have found Training in one discipline may increase your performance in another. Combining many practices can help boost flexibility, strength, and stability in less time.

Overall I teach the ability to move your body with correct muscle and joint function for effortless, pain free movement.

This photograph was taken of our client who is training post surgery after two knee replacements. Following a program of training in strength, balance and flexibility he is moving towards getting into a position he never felt would be possible. Standing to floor is now also executed with ease using exercises that help you perform activities in everyday life more easily: this is functional training.

Additionally, improved strength and control in the triceps contribute to better overall arm function, which is crucial for those experiencing instability. This training helps prevent overextension and compensatory injuries, allowing individuals to maintain an active lifestyle.
