ESSENTIAL OILS SPOTLIGHT
I will be continuing to share the beauty and wisdom that is essential oils and their amazing benefits this year, as it feels important to me to spread the word on how much of an impact these oils can have on the mind and body.
This month we'll be looking at... Cypress!
January is now behind us, and yet the grey skies, rainy weather and chilly temperature of winter persist. This can be disheartening for many, and so I wanted to spotlight Cypress for it’s emotional benefits.
Steam distilled from the leaves, needle, and cones of the cypress tree, Cypress has deep base notes that mean the aroma persists, which is why, like other wood-based oils, I is used in candle-making.
The emotional aspects of Cypress are amazing – it is an incredibly grounding oil, giving strength to the user. It is particularly good for clients who have a lot going on in their lives, and so arrive feeling teary and emotionally overwhelmed. This makes it a great pairing with marjoram for supporting the process of grief and loss.
Cypress is an astringent essential oil, meaning that it has a shrinking effect on the body’s systems – narrowing blood vessels to ease heavy bleeding in periods, and easing varicose veins for example. This also makes it a natural deodorant by keeping excess sweating under control.
As well as this, Cypress is hormonally supportive for the menstrual cycle and can help to regulate menstrual, hormonal and peri-menopausal problems.
I like to blend Cypress with cituses such as Bergamot and Sweet Orange, as well as herbs like Clary Sage, Lavender, and Rosemary, but we always create a blend together that focuses on your individual needs, wants and desires.
(Please note that Cypress is a natural diuretic so like most essential oils, must be avoided during pregnancy.)
