Ingrown toenails...

Painful, yet easily treated

An ingrown toenail often affects the big toe, on one or both sides. The nail grows, curled towards the skin which can then become red, swollen and tender.

Other symptoms may include a build up of fluid of the skin at the end of the toe, white or yellow puss coming from the affected area or pain when pressure is place onto the toe.

Ways that can help to prevent and treat this are:
~Keeping your feel clean and dry (preventing an infection that can damage the nail and cause an ingrown toenail to form)
~Making sure that you are wearing comfortable and well fitting shoes
~Making sure that you are cutting your toenails straight across, to stop the ails from digging into the skin around the toe.

If nothing helps, ten you may need to contact a podiatrist for a procedure called a Partial Nail Avulsion.

A Partial Nail Avulsion means numbing the toe and removing part of the toenail which is causing the issues, this helps to prevent the nail from growing back and becoming ingrown in the future.

It is the most commonly used procedure when treating ingrown toenails and is very effective.

Orthotics... what is it?

Orthotics is the area of medicine which deals with the provision and use of artificial devices like splints and shoe insoles.

Someone trained in orthotics within podiatry may assess individuals and provide a wide range of braces and supports (orthoses) for the feet and lower limbs. Orthoses are used to correct, accommodate or maintain good positioning of the muscles, bones and joints, they do this by aiding to rest, protect or support the muscles, bones and joints which may help with your posture and mobility.

These devices are used to relieve or correct/ treat foot, leg or back problems, such as flat feet.

Corns and calluses on the feet are thickened areas of skin that can become painful.

They are caused by excessive pressure or rubbing on the skin.

This can lead to foot problems, especially on walking, the most common cause of corns or calluses are wearing ill-fitting shoes.

If you have diabetes, heart disease or problems with your circulation, do not try to treat corns and calluses yourself.

These conditions can make foot problems more serious.

A podiatrist can remove corns and calluses and can advise on footwear, shoe inserts and padding to prevent recurrences.

Flat feet, or 'fallen arches', occur when the normal foot arches have partially or completely collapsed.
When the foot is put to the ground the inner or middle side of the foot comes down to the floor rather than remaining raised.
This could be natural forming of could be caused by other things, , such as arthritis, or age.
This can cause the whole foot to roll inwards (this is called over-pronation). It is not considered a disorder if it doesn't cause any symptoms.

If flat feet do cause symptoms these may include:

-Foot pain, which may involve the whole foot or ankle, or just parts of it.
-The altered placement of the foot on the ground can then lead to pain in the calf, knee, thigh, hip or spine.
-Foot stiffness.
-Uneven wearing of shoes.
-The sensation of foot flatness or imbalance (particularly if only one foot is affected).

You will need to see a podiatrist do diagnose if you have flat feet, from there, they can advise and help you, like having insoles or braces.
