Rochdale Occupational Health Service Ltd Protecting, Improving and Promoting healthcare in the workplace since 1963 Today, the same aims and objectives apply.

The Rochdale Occupational Health Service Ltd (ROHS), registered Charity No: 222649, was established in 1963 with the aid of a grant from the Nuffield Foundation. The aims and objectives were to provide occupational health services for workers in Rochdale and surrounding districts in the style of a co-operative - sharing health care services and facilities provided by nursing and medical staff, providing regular contact for the benefit of workers in a wide range of industries, at a reasonable cost to the employer. ROHS has grown steadily and now, nearly 50 years later, has matured with a wealth of experience gained over those years. The present qualified professional staff work closely with member companies to provide occupational health and safety expertise, and their knowledge contributes to each company establishing safe working practices and a safe working environment for the company’s employees within the guidelines of numerous regulations.

A company's failure to guard dangerous machinery cost a worker their life.

Paul Whalley, 46, was cleaning a plastic conversion machine at Reflex Flexible Packaging Ltd's Derbyshire factory when he entered an opening that gave whole-body access to dangerous moving parts. He became trapped and died at the scene from crush asphyxia.

Our investigation found the company had failed to carry out proper risk assessments or install appropriate guarding. The company's own health and safety department had identified the lack of risk assessments 18 months before Paul's death, but no action was taken.

Paul's death was entirely preventable. Effective guarding and safe systems of work are essential to prevent similar accidents.
