Meet Achille 👋🛻
He’s been working as a driver for MSF in Bangassou, Central African Republic (CAR), since 2016.
“You need stamina and a true humanitarian spirit for this job,” he says.
According to the UN, just 600km of the 25,000km road network in CAR is paved. This makes it hard for people to reach health facilities, and for aid organisations to get help to where it’s needed. Insecurity adds an extra layer of complexity to travelling in CAR.
“Of course, the state of the roads is often very challenging, especially in the north of the prefecture. It can be a real ordeal, and then you witness difficult situations, like blood and injured people. But, at the end of the day, I feel a sense of pride in contributing to people's wellbeing.”
Next year, Achille plans to stop working and enjoy his retirement. His career choice has clearly inspired his children, who are also committed to helping others.
"My youngest daughter is training to be a first aider here at Bangassou hospital. My eldest daughter works for the Central African Red Cross, and my sons want to become driver-mechanics, like me. I hope they pursue their careers with MSF!"
