NK Active

NK Active Specialist Foot, Ankle & Lower Limb Clinic in Awbridge, Romsey, with satellite clinics in Basingstoke & Winchester.

See us for all lower limb issues, including diagnosis, gait analysis, sports injuries & rehab, general mobility and routine chiropody. Nick graduated from Northampton University in 2009 and finished his Masters in clinical lower limb biomechanics at Brighton University in 2019. He has been fortunate enough to work with a range of people, from those with the simple aim of being able walk to the shops, right up to elite / professional athletes, including the London 2012 Paralympic games. Nick then started NK Sports Podiatry Ltd, later becoming NK Active. Here are NK Active we are passionate about getting you back to activity, and more importantly keeping you there. We understand your pain, we have had several injuries and understand the pain of not being able to play sport and be active. We are fortunate enough to have 3D gait analysis equipment in our clinic, the only location south of London. 3D gait analysis allows us to look at walking and running in all 3 planes of motion, a normal camera can’t see rotation. It allows us to look at hip to toe function as one and takes out the guessing. Patients describe it as as ‘A MRI of how you run’

We have the AXiT strength by numbers system in clinic, which we utilise to gain a clear understanding of your strength profile. We have also recently acquired an AlterG anti gravity treadmill, which is beneficial to both injury recovery and improving strength and fitness. Combined with our shockwave equipment and Swift microwave therapy machine, we are truly a one-stop-shop for all your lower limb requirements. We will work with you, offering a range of treatments from exercise programmes, return to activity plans, footwear advice, custom orthoses, we will do everything we can to help you, with you in full control of your treatment plan. We keep up to date with the latest evidence and have access to a full-strength gym, to help take you the whole journey from injury back to activity, whatever level that is, remember age is just an number.

Nick injured his heel at the start of the month (hazard: child’s plastic toy 🧸 (parents, you get it!)

Then he played hockey… and made it worse.
Direct impact onto his heel fat pad = not ideal.

So what did he do? Treated himself like he would for his patients👇

✔️ Taped his foot to reduce fat pad impact
✔️ Switched to his Vimazi trainers to offload the heel (softer, less stiff foam at the heel = better load management)

Result?
Jumping around comfortably and back on his feet without aggravating it, and paused his hockey training/games until he is better with his symptoms🙌

Fat pad irritation needs impact management, not just “rest and hope.”

☕️ Tea Talks with Nick | Imaging: When Is It Actually Helpful?

This week’s Tea Talk came straight from conversations in clinic and a question we hear all the time 👇
“Do I need a scan… and will it change my treatment?”

Nick breaks down the role of imaging (X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, CT) when managing forefoot pain, especially pain between the 3rd and 4th metatarsals.

👣 Key takeaways from this episode:
• Bursitis vs neuroma — different diagnoses, often very similar conservative management
• Imaging is brilliant for ruling out the serious stuff
• But… it doesn’t always change the rehab plan
• A thorough history + examination can often guide treatment first
• When imaging is essential: stress fractures need early offloading!
• Why multiple findings can coexist, without all of them being the pain driver

💡 Big reminder:
👉 Treat the patient, not the scan.

Sometimes the best first step isn’t imaging: it’s footwear, width, insoles, and load management. If progress stalls, imaging can then help guide the next decision.

🎥 Inside our 3D Gait Analysis at NK Active

Ever wondered how your body really moves?
With our 3D gait analysis, we capture your lower-limb movement in all 3 planes of motion, giving us detailed data on what’s happening when you move.

🔍 This helps us uncover why those niggles or recurring injuries might keep popping up.

🏃‍♂️ And it’s not just for runners, we can assess walking mechanics too.

When we pair 3D gait analysis with our body strength testing, the picture becomes even clearer 🧩
Movement + strength = a smarter, more targeted rehab plan.

It’s all about understanding your body and mapping out the next steps in your recovery journey.

☕💬 Tea Talks with Nick | Adapting Exercises to the Individual

In this episode of Tea Talks, Nick dives into how exercises don’t have to be one-size-fits-all and how small tweaks can make a big difference to outcomes.

He also explores emerging research showing that leaning forward during a calf raise can increase foot loading, helping patients get more from their exercises, especially when training at home with limited equipment! 👣💪

Perfect for anyone rehabbing at home, supporting patients remotely, or looking to make their exercises work harder without making them more complicated.

☕👣 Tea Talks with Nick | Gait Testing & 3D Gait Analysis

In this episode of Tea Talks with Nick, we’re breaking down gait testing and how we use 3D gait analysis at NK Active and when it’s actually useful (and when it’s not)

🧠 When 3D gait analysis can be really helpful:
✔️ If you’ve had a long history of injuries across different areas
✔️ When patterns of movement may be contributing to repeated problems

🚦 When it’s not the right tool:
❌ Following direct trauma
❌ After a recent change in training load or structure
❌ During a flare-up of a systemic condition
❌ If you’re currently uninjured and moving well

The right assessment at the right time makes all the difference. This episode is all about choosing the most appropriate tools to guide rehab, performance, and long-term progress.
