Ross Rabbits

Ross Rabbits Hobbyist breeder of French Lop companion pet rabbits - probably the cuddliest and most affectionate bunnies you'll ever meet!

Online shop stocking a range of bunny supplies and some bunny-themed gifts. Ross Rabbits is the name of our website. We're bunny-enthusiasts following our long-term nearly 50-year hobby with our pampered family pets living in our home and garden. Today we are proud to be owned by an extended family of large, chunky, cuddly French Lops who have completely taken over our lives - and they know it! Our website gives information and advice about adopting and caring for pet rabbits, as companion rabbits, with information about what to look for when adopting your new furry friend, choosing your new pet bunny, housing, handling, feeding, grooming, house/litter-training and an introduction to general rabbit healthcare and welfare. We are not a large commercial or impersonal 'stud' but very small-scale, hobbyists breeding occasionally to maintain and improve our lines of over-fussed and pampered pet bunnies whom we've bred and raised ourselves for nearly 50 years, yes - nearly half a century! These produce equally pampered babies, some of whom are adopted and lucky enough to move into some of the most loving homes across the UK. We breed only to maintain our lines and normally produce only 2-3 litters per year. We do not breed for income or profit, nor do we breed specifically to sell - indeed, of our French Lop girls, at least a third are usually our elderly and retired 'geriatrics' who remain our much-loved pets and another third are youngsters. We sometimes have some of our bunnies' families available for adoption by loving pet homes only - and these can be seen on our Babies for Sale page of our website at www.rossrabbits.co.uk and general updates are available on our main page at: https://www.facebook.com/rossrabbitsburrowcourt

Our interest in ' small furries' began early in 1970-1972 when we started switching from keeping and breeding guinea-pigs and moved towards focusing on companion pet rabbits and specialising in our favourite breed - big, cuddly, snuggly and affectionate French Lops. All of our bunnies are family pets who are snuggled, cuddled and fussed throughout the day - every day! All exercise in our garden during the daytime and summer evenings while others live indoors with us as house-rabbits where they enjoy extra cuddles 'on demand'. We generally retain several girls from each litter we breed which helps us maintain and improve our lines, introduce new colours and patterns, and ensure our favourite families remain with us for future generations. We keep a few boys purely for sentimental reasons but these are pets-only as we do not believe in in-breeding. Along with their careful selective breeding, our regular handling guarantees they are used to gentle human touch and being handled with no negative experiences so they have no fear or apprehension of humans. As a result, our bunnies grow up with love and affection - and continue to demand this throughout their lives! Our bunnies are fully socialised from a very young age and we ensure they are all handled, fussed and snuggled from shortly after birth and every day thereafter. This is especially important in large breeds who have the potential to become quite unmanageable if not correctly socialised.

** Martha has now moved into her new home with a new comfy knee to snooze on. Thank you to all who expressed an interest in her. **

Adult French Lop available, Martha,

Black mantle girl, born 26 March 2021

Excellent health. Never had a day's illness in her life.

She is a big girl with a heavy, chunky build and probably weighs about 6-6.5kg. She eats well, and it shows!

Martha has been bred several times, loves the boys and becoming pregnant, then carries kits to full term, delivers into a half-hearted nest then... completely ignores the kits. She has only ever reared a single-born and this was with significant help. She could be bred again but a foster-mum would need to be on standby to rear the kits if neglected. Alternatively, she is probably better-suited as a family pet either alone as an indoor house-bun or with a neutered buck for companionship - she likes boys!

She could live indoors or out and is litter-trained. She's not a great fan of being picked up and carried but will happily sit on a knee or by your ankles to enjoy a shoulder massage. She enjoys being out on the lawn doing a little gardening and trimming the grass while also devouring dandelions.

Reason for offering: We had always hoped Martha would continue her grandma Maggie's mantle line but this clearly isn't to be. Due to struggling with ongoing non-local parental health issues involving frequently traveling up/down the country, times are difficult here and we've had to reduce bunny numbers accordingly.

Adoption fee: £25 to include a starter bag of pellets/hay/treats and a flexible £25 worth of toys and/or accessories from our online shop.

Note: she is currently undergoing a light moult which can be seen on her back.

Collection from Ross-on-Wye/Monmouth area.

Adult available - ready now

Maude is our first ever black mantle girl born February 2019. She enjoys outdoor life, loves to roam and explore a safe garden, laze in the shade of a bush or stretch out inside a tunnel to watch her bunny friends play and has always had an eye for handsome (neutered!) bucks. Maude has no known health issues and has never been ill.

Maude is litter-trained so could live as a house-bunny or would be just as happy as an outdoor rabbit with a large, safe, enclosed garden to explore and maybe dig a little in, if she can be bothered. She isn't keen on being picked up or handled so isn't a lap bunny but enjoys being fussed at ground level. She could be the ideal partner for an older bereaved (neutered) buck or a middle-aged buck seeking a gentle romance in his latter years.

Following a year of no breeding due to the pandemic, we have now resumed and are delighted to offer purebreed French Lop youngsters to loving pet homes.

We have two boys and two girls who would ideally like to be adopted together to remain in bonded pairs. The boy will need to be neutered at puberty, ie approx 14-16 weeks of age.

They are undergoing litter-training to live as house-bunnies or would be happy to live outdoors in spacious accommodation in neutered pairs.

Marigold's boy, now 17 days young and leaving his nest.

15/11/2021

54 hours old and growing fast.

Despite being a solo-boy, he's maintaining his body temperature, helped by heatpads, feeding well and making excellent progress.

13/11/2021

Congratulations to Marigold who safely delivered her son this morning. Again, he's just a single kit so, without siblings to help him maintain his body temperature, he has a heatpad in his nest.

Resuming breeding following the enforced Covid break has been a challenge and some girls are now past their fertile peak which is probably why litters have been so small. However, to move forward, our two spring-girls are now looking forward to motherhood and one, Margot, had her first date this afternoon so paws are crossed.

In the meantime, here's our new boy having his first very quick check while mum feasted on fresh raspberry leaves. Although only 5 hours young, he looks about 4 days old and already has some downy fur.
