It’s World Mental Health Day today- a subject that’s still so hard to talk about for so many.
Please remember that if you’re struggling it doesn’t mean you’re failing. Lots of things affect your mental health- lack of sleep, anxiety about the future, difficult relationships, money worries and so much more. Mental and physical health are all intertwined too, so being unwell can make you feel anxious or depressed, and being anxious or depressed can make you feel physically unwell too.
So what’s the answer? Well the first thing to do is to acknowledge that mental health is something we all have. And mental ill health will affect many of us in our lifetime.
Second- think about the things you can control, rather than focusing on what is outside of your control. Prevention is easier than cure, so looking after your mental health by taking some time for yourself, getting things off your chest and looking after yourself physically (diet and exercise really do play a huge part!) can be enough to move you in a better direction.
Thirdly- if you’re struggling do something about it. Talk to your GP, refer yourself for therapy through IAPT, or book in with someone like me. Having a helping hand can make all the difference.
And if you’re supporting a loved one who is struggling with their mental health, don’t forget to take the time to look after you too. You know how on aeroplane safety information they tell you to put your oxygen mask on first? They do that for a reason.
If you need help and want to chat, do get in touch. Your initial consultation is free of charge and all about you understanding more about how the mind works and how the therapy I practice works. It also helps me to know whether I think we’re a good fit. Finding the right therapy and the right therapist is so important.
All sessions are online so you don’t even need to leave the house to get the help you need.
