Sallie has loved reading this book over the years because of the characters and illustrations.

Louise is sharing the childhood book that means a lot to her which is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl🎫

“As a child this book really fed into my imagination. At school my teacher would read a chapter a day and it filled me with anticipation to go to school the next day to find out what was going to happen.

“I think this is something we don’t do enough with children these days as everything is instant and accessible. But we need to leave space to grow their imaginations.
“I really love the part in the book where Charlie gets the golden ticket and takes his grandpa, Joe. The fact that there are few pictures in the book really helped me to visualise the characters in my mind.” - Louise, Early Years Team Member🍫

The Very Hungry Caterpillar has always been a household favourite for Cllr Marshall, Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Street Scene and Green Spaces🐛 Cllr Marshall read it to her children and is now reading it to her grandchildren✨

“I first read The Very Hungry Caterpillar to my children because it's more than a sweet story. It teaches counting, the days of the week and healthy eating. It also teaches the beauty of growth and change.

“I now read it to my grandchildren, and it feels just as magical. Watching their eyes light up at the colourful pages reminds me that some stories don't just last a childhood, they connect generations.” – Cllr Marshall🍓

We all love reading for so many reasons, but the main reason we love children’s books is the feeling of nostalgia we get📖

For Lucy, this book is Each Peach Pear Plum🧸

“I want to tell you about one of my all-time favourite books, Each Peach Pear Plum. I loved it as a little girl but have really enjoyed sharing it with my own children. I particularly love the final page where all the characters come together and have a really exciting picnic.” – Lucy, Early Years Team Member🍐

Jeanette loved to read Whatever Next by Jill Murphy with her children as it is a beautiful story🧸

“We loved looking at the pictures and seeing what the bear is doing and the adventures that he has. We particularly loved the last page where the bear talks about his adventures with his mum.

“This is something I enjoyed doing with my children at bath time, talking about what they have done in their day, whether that be at school or the many adventures they have with their friends.” – Jeanette, Early Years Team Member🌕

We’re starting off by sharing with you two of Cllr Cusworth’s (Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People’s Services) favourite childhood books, The Wind in the Willows and The Faraway Tree🌳

“I was around nine years old when I first read The Wind in the Willows and I fell in love with the characters and the story. It’s a book I have gone back to many times. I was delighted when they did the centenary edition which is beautifully illustrated.

“When I read The Faraway Tree, I realised that reading takes you to so many different places and can really broaden your imagination. This is a book that I have read to younger family members and taken into schools as it really does spark your imagination.” – Cllr Cusworth🦡
