Potty training can feel like a big step, and it doesn’t always happen in a straight line. The Starting Reception Potty Training Guide recognises that around 1 in 4 children are not yet toilet trained when they start Reception, which shows how common this is for families.
The guide explains that, where possible, being out of nappies before starting school can help children feel more confident and comfortable in the classroom. For many families, starting gently and giving children time to practise these skills ahead of school can make the transition a little easier.
Remember that it's a team effort too so link in with your nursery, pre-school, childminder or whoever helps care for your child so that you can all support your child's potty training journey.
The guide also includes specific advice for children with SEND, recognising that their potty-training journey may be different. Every child develops at their own pace, and support, patience and understanding really matter.
