“At this time of Remembrance, we come together to honour everyone who has served and everyone who is still serving.

“We think about the courage, the sacrifice and the commitment shown by our veterans, our serving personnel and their families.

“At ROADS provided by WithYou, we’re proud to stand alongside the Armed Forces community. We’re here to listen, to support and to walk alongside anyone who needs us today and always. No one should ever feel they have to carry things alone.

“As we pause and reflect, we do so with thanks, with respect and with the promise that we will always remember them.

“But for some veterans and service members, this time of year can be incredibly difficult.

“Grief, trauma, survivor’s guilt, and memories can resurface — and for many, that pain is quietly carried with the mask of drugs or alcohol.

“This is a time to remember — but also to check in, reach out, and offer support, not judgement.

If you know someone who’s struggling, remind them they’re not alone.” - Andy Craze, WithYou National Armed Forces Lead

Wear your poppy, but also lead with compassion. Because remembrance isn’t just about the past — it’s about how we care for our veterans today

For those who serve — or have served — in the British Armed Forces, life after operations, deployments, or even day-to-day stress can take its toll.

This time of year, events like Bonfire Night and fireworks displays can activate anxiety.

Whether you're managing trauma, struggling with alcohol or drug use, or just trying to stay on top of your mental health — grounding techniques can help you in the moment.

🧠 Try this: The 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique:
👀 5 things you can see
🤲 4 things you can touch
👂 3 things you can hear
👃 2 things you can smell
👅 1 thing you can taste

It’s quick, quiet, and helps bring you back to the present when your mind is racing. It won’t solve everything — but it can help you steady yourself.

Remember, asking for help isn't weakness. It’s strength.

Whether you’re still serving, a veteran, or part of the wider armed forces community — you’re not on your own. ROADS is WithYou.

Take one breath, one step at a time.

As we enjoy Bonfire Night celebrations this week with fireworks and festivities, let’s spare a thought for those who may find it distressing.

For some - including our Armed Forces Community, the loud bangs, flashing lights, and unexpected noises can trigger painful memories or anxiety.

🎇 If you’re planning fireworks:

• Let neighbours know in advance
• Avoid late-night displays
• Consider quieter options where possible - you can even find silent fireworks!

💙 A bit of awareness and kindness can go a long way. Let’s make sure everyone in our communities feels safe and respected.

🎃 Halloween reminder 🎃

As you head out for a night of spooky fun, please remember that not everyone experiences Halloween the same way.

For some people including veterans, loud noises, surprise visitors, or flashing lights can be upsetting.

🙏 Be mindful of your neighbours.
💡 Keep noise and lights to a minimum when possible.
💙 A little awareness goes a long way.

Let’s have fun with care and compassion. We’re WithYouuuuuuuu 👻 all the way.

🎃 While many of us enjoy the scares and surprises of Halloween, it can be a very different experience for people who have experienced trauma, social anxiety or have sensory overwhelm.

Sudden loud noises, unexpected knocks from strangers, or even certain costumes can be activating.

As you're decorating, celebrating, or trick-or-treating this year, please take an extra moment to think about everyone in your community. A little kindness and awareness can go a long way.

✅ Keep noise levels to a minimum
✅ Be mindful with decorations and costumes
✅ Respect signs that may ask not to knock
✅ Check in on those who might be struggling

Let’s make Halloween fun and safe for everyone 💙 ROADS is WithYou

Autumn and winter can be a tough time for many — but especially for members of the Armed Forces Community.

For some, this season brings:
🕯️ Heightened memories of loss
🥶 Increased isolation and loneliness
🍷 Struggles with alcohol or substance use
🧠 Worsening mental health and symptoms

Shorter days, colder weather, and reminders of past service or sacrifice can weigh heavily on those who’ve served — and their families.

You can help by:
- Checking in on a veteran or military family
- Starting a conversation
- Showing patience and understanding.
- Highlighting that there is specialist support from us here at ROADS

Support and connection can make a real difference.
