πŸ’œ UK Malnutrition Awareness Week – 17th–23rd November πŸ’œ
🀱🏽 Eating well whilst breastfeeding
Breastfeeding uses up extra energy β€” so eating a varied and balanced diet helps keep both you and your baby healthy.
πŸ₯— Include:

Wholegrains, fruits, and vegetables

Protein-rich foods like beans, eggs, fish, or meat

Calcium-rich foods such as milk, cheese, or dairy alternatives

πŸ’§ Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, to stay hydrated.

πŸ’œ UK Malnutrition Awareness Week – 17th–23rd November πŸ’œ
🩸 Low iron (anaemia) in pregnancy

Iron helps your body make red blood cells to carry oxygen around. During pregnancy, your body needs more iron β€” and sometimes that means you can develop anaemia.

⚠️ Signs of low iron include:

Tiredness or weakness

Dizziness or headaches

Shortness of breath or palpitations

Routine blood tests in pregnancy check your iron levels, and your midwife will support you if you need supplements or diet advice.

πŸ’œ UK Malnutrition Awareness Week – 17th–23rd November πŸ’œπŸ€°πŸ½ Morning sickness

Feeling or being sick in pregnancy is very common β€” especially in the early weeks. Most people feel better by 16–20 weeks, but for some it can last longer.

πŸ’‘ Tips to help:

Eat small, frequent meals and avoid strong smells.

Drink plenty of fluids.

Rest when you can.

If you’re struggling to keep fluids down or losing weight, speak to your midwife or GP β€” there’s help available.

πŸ’œ UK Malnutrition Awareness Week – 17th–23rd November πŸ’œπŸŒΈ Vitamin supplements in pregnancy

If there’s a chance you might get pregnant, or you’re already expecting, it’s important to eat a healthy, balanced diet β€” and take the right vitamins to support your baby’s development.

βœ… Take 400 micrograms of folic acid every day until you’re 12 weeks pregnant – this helps prevent problems with your baby’s brain and spine.
βœ… Take 10 micrograms of vitamin D every day between September and March to keep bones, teeth, and muscles healthy.

πŸ’œπŸŒ World Prematurity Day – 17th November πŸŒπŸ’œ

Did you know that in our area, 7.8% of births are premature?
That means babies are born before 37 weeks of pregnancy β€” and around half of these births happen unexpectedly, with no known risk factors.

Some of these tiny fighters need extra care on a Neonatal Unit (NNU), where specialist teams support them and their families during those first crucial days and weeks.

πŸ‘ΆπŸ½ Ever wondered what life is like on a Neonatal Unit?
πŸŽ₯ Watch this short animation, β€œ24 Hours on NNU,” to see what to expect and how neonatal teams care for babies born too soon:

πŸ’œπŸŒ World Prematurity Day – 17th November πŸŒπŸ’œ

Today, we’re raising awareness about premature birth β€” when a baby is born before 37 weeks of pregnancy.

Sometimes, babies who arrive early need special care on a Neonatal Unit. This can mean giving birth at a different hospital than you originally planned, so that both you and your baby receive the right care and support.

We know this can be an emotional and unexpected part of the journey, but knowing your options in advance can really help.

πŸŽ₯ Watch this short animation to learn more about your choices for place of birth in and around South Yorkshire, and the support available to you and your baby.

πŸŒπŸ’œ Today is World Prematurity Day (17th November) πŸ’œπŸŒ

Today, we join families, healthcare professionals, and communities around the world in raising awareness of premature birth β€” when a baby is born before 37 weeks of pregnancy.

Every year, thousands of families experience the journey of premature birth. It can be an emotional and challenging time, but it’s also a journey marked by strength, hope, and resilience β€” both from our tiniest fighters and their families. πŸ‘ΆπŸ½βœ¨

At our Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnership (MNVP), we are committed to ensuring that the voices of families who have experienced neonatal care are heard, valued, and acted upon. Together with our NHS partners, we continue to work towards improving experiences and outcomes for babies born too soon and their families.

πŸ’œ Today we:

Celebrate the courage of parents and babies who have spent time in neonatal care.

Honour the dedication of neonatal teams who provide life-saving care and compassion.

Remember and stand with families who have experienced loss.

Let’s shine a light β€” quite literally β€” for every little one born too soon. πŸ’œ

πŸ“Έ If you or someone you love has been touched by premature birth, we invite you to share a photo or message below to help us raise awareness and offer encouragement to others.
