Calum Mackintosh, forever 19 . . .
Calum was a super fit 19 year old studying a Law degree at Napier University. He split his free time between rugby for Napier (and formerly Highland) and his first love, shinty, playing for Kingussie Camanachd - he won the Camanachd Cup Final with them in Sept 2023, and Edinburgh University.
On 18th November 2023, he was supposed to be playing shinty for Edinburgh. Around 9am, he got up to get a glass of water in the flat he shared with Eoin. Eoin heard a thud and when he went to the kitchen he found Calum lying on the floor. Calum smiled, said something like "this is not good mate" and died in Eoinโs arms. They had been best friends since they were 3 years old.
My husband and other two sons made the 3 hour journey to Edinburgh, but it was too late. Gradually the news trickled out to all of Calum's friends and teammates and they gathered together to support each other.
At the time, I was in Nepal guiding blind and visually impaired people to Everest Base Camp, so when my eldest son phoned me that night, I was almost the last person to find out about Calum, and had to fight to get flights back to the UK to be with my family.
Calum's funeral started with a final lap of The Dell, Kingussie's shinty pitch and over a 1000 people were there. 500 of them created a guard of honour, representing all the sports Calum had played in his short life.
His nickname at shinty was The Otter, and Kingussie now play with otters and his name on all of their strips, and take an otter mascot to all their games.
Life without Cal will never be the same, he was our whirlwind youngest son, but he will never be forgotten.
I have worked hard to raise awareness of young sudden cardiac death, and with his friends to raise money for cardiac screenings in Carrbridge for local youngsters.
Don't ever turn down the opportunity to have your young person screened - it is too late for Calum and our family, but it could save their lives.
