The practice shall be closed on the afternoon of Friday 5 December for our regular First Aid Training.

CPR is an emergency lifesaving procedure, performed when the heart stops beating, often called a cardiac arrest. It is necessary to save the life of someone in cardiac arrest.

Each year over 40,000 people have an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the UK. Less than 1 in 10 survive. Giving CPR promptly and using a defibrillator can more than double someone’s chance of survival.

APCOS (Acute Primary Care Ophthalmology Service) is a NHS service provided to patients experiencing recently occurring medical eye conditions with appropriate treatment in the community. At Pantiles Eye Centre we provide this essential service with our Specialist Independent Prescribing Optometrists and Consultant Surgeon Ophthalmologists, who have specialist knowledge and skills to carry out this work in the community, reducing the need to visit the hospital.
The NHS funded APCOS service is designed for recently occurring symptoms relating to your eyes or vision:
Sudden and recent reduction in vision in one or both eyes
Red eye(s) or eyelids
Pain and/or discomfort in the eyes
Recent onset or sudden increase in flashes and/or floaters in one or both eyes
Mild trauma, for example a scratch to the outer surface of the eye or eyelid
Suspected foreign body in the eye
Recent onset of double vision
Significant recent discharge from or watering of the eye.

This service does not replace the routine eye examination, eye tests or prescription for glasses. A sight test will not be performed as part of the assessment or treatment and you will not be issued with a prescription for glasses. If the Optometrist or Ophthalmologist feels that this is important they will discuss it with you and advise a separate appointment for this to happen.

Producing tears is vital for keeping the eyes healthy and protected – and this can become more noticeable if something irritates the eye, such as a gush of wind or a small piece of debris, causing the eye to start streaming.
Despite being called ‘dry’ eye syndrome, excessively watery eyes is a key symptom of this common condition. Eyes may also feel gritty and irritated and more sensitive to bright light and vision might be blurry. Dry eye syndrome is most common in over-50s, people who wear contact lenses, or spend a lot of time looking at computer screens. Other conditions – including Sjögren’s syndrome, lupus and blepharitis – and certain medications can sometimes be linked with dry eye syndrome too.
Our Optometrist can discuss a treatment plan at your regular eye examination.
