What sort of exercises do women need to consider in later life? 🤔

Jan Vickery, tells us a little about the different focus needed for the best activities as we age.

A good exercise programme includes a combination of cardiovascular, strengthening, stretching and balance exercises. However, evidence suggests that women should focus on strengthening in their exercising as they get older. Resistance training improves muscle strength and has been shown to improve bone health. As women get older this helps to them to stay physically independent and reduces the risk of falls.

Jan shows us some basic exercises: squats for your quad muscles, leg raises, and heel-to-toe walking or standing on one leg for core balance.

If you’re not keen on a specific exercise plan, then activities such as walking can be a great way to cover a number of different types of exercise, so don’t worry if you don’t always do as much as you’d like. The fact you are trying is what matters.

What happens at an NHS health check? 🤔

If you’re aged 40-75 you’re eligible for an NHS Health Check. Join registered nurse from the AXA Health 24/7 health support line for members, Jo Poolman, for a guide to getting a medical MOT.

Learn more about getting a health check: https://www.axahealth.co.uk/staying-healthy/ageing-well/what-is-a-health-check-or-mot/

The NHS Health Check is a free overall health check that can be carried out at your local GP, and in some pharmacies. As Jo explains, Health Checks are carried out by a nurse in most cases and will include being asked questions about your lifestyle habits and family medical history as well as measuring height, weight, blood pressure and cholesterol.

Receiving results during the check in the form of a risk score, a Health Check is a valuable way to identify early symptoms of what could become larger health problems, which helps you stay on top of your health.

Age and experience can be liberating! 🙌

Jan Vickery, Propositions Lead and chartered physiotherapist, tells us a little about the advantages of a healthy attitude to staying active as you age.

Creating realistic expectations of yourself and making sure you’re doing something that you actually enjoy to keep active is really important.

Set achievable targets for goals that matter to you. Targets that are too high will make it easy to give up when you can’t reach that level. Targets don’t always need to be about numbers, they can also be about how you want to feel as a result of an activity. And remember there will be ups and downs if you are focussing on reaching a specific target.

As Jan says: “the secret to success is choosing an exercise currency that works for you”. Then you’ll want to get out and take part – and the habit will be sustainable.

Meet Andrew. He’s been volunteering since he was 10!

Driven by an obsession with wildlife and the natural world, volunteering has taken him from his local RSPCA to Namibia and Sumatra to track and survey leopards and tigers. 🐆🐅

Andrew now volunteers closer to home at East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service – where he helps feed and care for orphaned birds. He also volunteers with the Sussex Barn Owl Trust, where he helps to monitor barn owls. 🦉

Andrew’s learnt patience and resilience through volunteering, as well as empathy and awareness of diversity amongst others. It’s also impacted his mental health positively, reducing stress and anxiety and allowing him to practice mindfulness outdoors.

“Volunteering makes me realise that we’re just one life playing out amongst millions of others, humans and animals, side by side,” comments Andrew. “Every living thing is out each day just trying to mostly do what they can to make their life a little better.”

Andrew has even carried his passion for volunteering into his job: “It’s shaped my career! I’m the Volunteering Proposition Manager at AXA UK and I cover all things volunteering and fundraising.” Andrew gets to showcase how AXA gives back to local communities and charities, helping colleagues plan activities for the 21 hours of volunteering time (pro rata) AXA employees receive per year.

What do you think your volunteering story could be? Why not see what opportunities are available in your own community?

Are you ready to join the Age-tervention? 💪

Our lively ‘wellness coach’ Raymond is going to help Adam and Danielle — two forty-somethings who admit they could probably be doing more now to age well in their future.

From breathing exercises and strength training to boosting their brains with creative art projects in nature, they’ll learn that small, positive habits today lead to a healthier, happier tomorrow.

Adam and Danielle will dive into volunteering, finding joy in helping others and building new connections to boost their social and mental health. They’ll see that staying active, social, and engaged makes the ageing journey exciting and fulfilling. It’s all about creating meaningful moments that keep spirits high and minds sharp.

To wrap things up, they explore nutritious cooking, social dining, and reflective journalling — powerful tools for mental clarity and emotional wellbeing.

Raymond’s message is clear: how you age is up to you! So why wait?

Remember - It’s never too early to start ageing well.

Meet Sally, who has been volunteering with the Teenage Cancer Trust for three years. The charity supported her son, who very sadly passed away from cancer aged 18.

Since volunteering, Sally has found it's given her a sense of belonging, taking a lot of satisfaction from the tasks she does - from bucket collections to raising awareness. She's also developed new skills in administration while supporting a charity that's close to her heart. She's also made some great friends within the team.

What would she say to someone considering volunteering? “Give it a go!”
