The Scandinavians are experts at winter - not surprising when they have such dark and cold days to get through. It’s part of the culture – and it’s where the idea of Hygge comes from.
The concept of ‘Hygge’ embodies a sense of cosiness, simplicity, and being present. Everyday togetherness is at the heart of the idea, and it can be used to connect to community in quieter winter months. Research has shown that Hygge practices may contribute to an overall positive feeling of wellbeing.
Why not make like the Danish?
It’s all about the atmosphere: low lighting, warm baths, cosy blankets, and, of course, hot chocolate is essential.
Journalling is a great way to be mindful – reflecting on the passing winter and planning for the coming months.
Meeting friends and reaffirming friendships is central to the idea too – so coffees out or cosy home-cooked meals with friends, is the order of the day. Try creating warming recipes using seasonal ingredients or by using up last summer’s food, think frozen berries, tomatoes, root vegetables, or jam.
