Nature offers a way to align our lives with the rhythm of the seasons. Just as spring is a time for growth and movement, winter invites reflection, planning, and preparation for what’s ahead.

Nature is shown to reduce cortisol - the stress hormone which can affect anxiety and depression. 🙂

Like trees forming buds in the cold months, we can use this time of year to nurture ideas and lay the groundwork, ready to burst forth with fresh energy and innovation when spring arrives. 🌱

Get some light therapy by getting outside regularly – every day you will notice that it gets a little lighter, especially more noticeable if you go out at the same time every day. Walking the dog is a good way to be sure you feel this benefit.🐕🌞

Do you think you could schedule more time in nature during your working week? 🌄

The Scandinavians are experts at winter - not surprising when they have such dark and cold days to get through. It’s part of the culture – and it’s where the idea of Hygge comes from.

The concept of ‘Hygge’ embodies a sense of cosiness, simplicity, and being present. Everyday togetherness is at the heart of the idea, and it can be used to connect to community in quieter winter months. Research has shown that Hygge practices may contribute to an overall positive feeling of wellbeing.

Why not make like the Danish?

It’s all about the atmosphere: low lighting, warm baths, cosy blankets, and, of course, hot chocolate is essential.

Journalling is a great way to be mindful – reflecting on the passing winter and planning for the coming months.

Meeting friends and reaffirming friendships is central to the idea too – so coffees out or cosy home-cooked meals with friends, is the order of the day. Try creating warming recipes using seasonal ingredients or by using up last summer’s food, think frozen berries, tomatoes, root vegetables, or jam.

Having access to inclusive services and information can a be a game changer if you’re blind or partially sighted. So, it’s frustrating when poorly designed websites and information make it difficult to do what you need to do.

While people are often quick to offer help, that’s not really what you need. You just need information and services you can access.

We offer our members information in alternative formats:
• Screen reader friendly websites
• Braille
• Large print
•Digital audio files

And if you need a bit longer to communicate with us, that’s fine – we’ll give you as much time as you need.

We had our annual Christmas market in the office this week, so we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to ask the team a little about how they celebrate Christmas.

- What’s your favourite Christmas film? 🎥🎅
- And do YOU have any Christmas traditions? 🎄🎁

Christmas, family dynamics, and the pressure to have it all 'perfect' can take a toll.
The festive season can be wonderful, but it can also bring pressure, fatigue and frayed nerves. Here are practical tips to protect your wellbeing this Christmas:

• Set boundaries: it’s OK to say no, trim your to-do list, and protect downtime – embrace the JOMO (joy of missing out).

• You don’t need to buy a present for everyone and their dog. 🐕

• Plan your time and pace yourself; build in rest and quiet moments. Try to reconnect with what you actually want and enjoy.

• Choose a few meaningful traditions and keep budgets realistic.

• Look after your own wellbeing: prioritise sleep, movement and mindful breathing.

• If spending time all together becomes tense, communicate calmly using “I” statements; agree on a polite time-out if conversations heat up.

• Reach out for support from a trusted friend or family member or seek professional help if needed.

If stress becomes overwhelming, you’re not alone. In the UK you can contact Samaritans on 116 123, or text SHOUT to 85258 for confidential support.

Wishing you comfort and care this festive season.

At times – like Christmas when togetherness is celebrated lonely feelings can really hit hard.

Loneliness is an issue that can affect the physical and mental wellbeing of people of all ages.

While addressing your experience of loneliness may take time, taking steps to build new and improve existing connections will help to improve your health and overall wellbeing.

We explore some ways to help combat loneliness, from helping others to why we shouldn't be comparing ourselves to others.

Make some new connections! Meeting like-minded people through community groups or hobbies is a great way to manage loneliness.

• Stop comparing yourself to others. Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) is a real thing, and it will help to remember that people are only sharing what they want the world to see about their lives, so don’t ‘compare and despair’.

• Volunteering – we’ve shared some lovely stories of the positive effects of volunteering recently, and it’s a great way to give back and find community.

• Communication! Reach out to friends and relatives, and if getting out is difficult, try the phone or video calls and emails to stay in touch. You might find it hard to do this though, so remember:

• Take it slow: being surrounded by people can be overwhelming, so bear that in mind and choose small steps, like an outdoors activity you can get busy with.

• Get a pet: a dog will get you out and give you an excuse to talk to people, it will also provide companionship, after all, a dog is ‘man’s best friend’. 🐕

Brighten up the festive season with the whole family, no matter how far apart you are. Here are some joyful ideas to keep generations connected and smiling: 👨🏾‍🤝‍👨🏽👩‍👩‍👦👨‍👨‍👧‍👦

• When you’re together in real life, bring out nostalgic items like photos, precious toys, or mementos from long-lost relatives to share and treasure. 🧸

• Do a fun group activity or set up a simple jigsaw that everyone can join in on during the holidays. 🧩

• If online isn’t always easy, start a short weekly video chat or a 20-minute game night to weave connection into your holiday rhythm. Easy family quizzes are a great, lighthearted option. ❔

• Have younger relatives teach you a new tech trick—whether it’s a fun game, a video filter, or a quick photo tip—so learning becomes a shared, reciprocal joy. 🖥

• If you can’t speak on Christmas Day, record a merry message or voice note for everyone to enjoy. 💬

• Stay safe and comfortable: use trusted family accounts, tweak simple privacy settings, and keep a quick phone backup in case a video call drops. With a little planning, tech can be a warm, festive bridge across generations.
