B O R N E O

Are you or your child embracing the world challenge this year?

The third-biggest island in the world, Borneo is divided between Indonesia, Brunei and the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak.

It is difficult to say which vaccines you need without asking a medical professional. Your itinerary, your medical history and the activities you have planned all affect which vaccinations you need. It is important that a trained travel nurse or pharmacist checks what you need.

After this, they will proceed to provide the service within the same appointment, or may rebook you for a follow up appointment, if further information is required.

The chickenpox vaccine offers effective protection against chickenpox.

It belongs to a group of vaccines referred to as “live” vaccines. This means, that it contains a weakened version of the virus that causes chickenpox. The vaccine causes your immune system to react to the vaccine. As a result, you’ll be immune to it if you catch the virus at a later date.

As you may have seen on the news in recent days the chickenpox vaccine is not yet currently part of the national vaccine schedule in the UK and is down to the Department of Health to make that decision.

At Superdrug, we offer the service for patients from 9 months of age up to the age of 65.

Protect yourself and your loved ones from common infections this winter.

Chickenpox - Chickenpox is a very common illness caused by the varicella-zoster virus. The chickenpox vaccine offers effective protection for patients who have not had chickenpox before.

Meningitis B - Meningococcal meningitis is caused by bacteria easily passed from person to person by coughing, sneezing and kissing. It can cause serious complications.

Shingles - Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. It can cause fever and rash. Unlike chickenpox, shingles can reoccur and cause repeated bouts.

Whooping Cough - Whooping cough is a bacterial infection of the respiratory tract that causes coughing, that in infants can come with a characteristic “whoop” as they breath in, a well as fever, sore throat and increased production of mucus. This vaccine is for pregnant women who want to protect their children against whooping cough in the first few months before the child can get vaccinated themselves.

Pneumonia - The pneumonia vaccine, helps protect you against serious and potentially fatal pneumococcal infections. The Superdrug pneumonia vaccination service is available all year round via our Superdrug Health Clinics and is suitable for both adults and children.

MMR - Measles, mumps, and rubella are highly infectious conditions that can have serious or potentially fatal outcomes, such as deafness, meningitis or swelling of the brain (encephalitis). Outbreaks don’t happen very often in the UK but it is still important to keep your vaccine status up to date.
