🎄 Supporting Neurodivergent Young People During the Christmas Period 🎄

The festive season can be exciting—but for many neurodivergent young people, it can also feel overwhelming. Changes in routine, sensory overload, and social expectations can make this time challenging.

Here are a few ways to help:
✅ Keep routines where possible – predictability reduces anxiety.
✅ Offer quiet spaces – a calm retreat can help with sensory overload.
✅ Give choices – let them decide how much to join in with activities.
✅ Prepare for changes – talk through plans in advance to ease uncertainty.
✅ Respect masking – if they need downtime after social events, that’s okay.

✨Christmas should feel safe and enjoyable for everyone. Small adjustments can make a big difference ✨

Do you have any tips that work for your family? Share them below—we’d love to hear! 👇

👫SPACES STILL AVAILABLE👫

If you would like to try our group sessions, we still have some spaces available across our sessions.

Our Inclusive Spaces group sessions are the perfect space to connect with others, explore activities and feel supported.

If your young person finds it difficult to separate, we have a parent/carer room next to the group room where parents/carers can enjoy a relaxed quiet space whilst giving their young person the peace of mind that they are nearby.

🫥MASKING AT SCHOOL 🫥

We know school days can be tough, and holding it together all day can be exhausting. Around Christmas, the expectation to join in the festivities can feel overwhelming—and for many young people, masking becomes a way to cope.

That’s why we love this Masking Toolkit for Parents from The Contented Child, Child Wellbeing Consultancy. It’s a fantastic resource to help explain what masking is, how to spot it, and practical ways to support your child..

They hold it together all day at school — smiling, following the rules, blending in. But the moment they get home, the mask slips. Tears, anger, exhaustion, silence.

This is masking — when a child hides their true feelings or struggles to fit in, often at great emotional cost. What looks like 'coping' at school can lead to collapse once they feel safe again.

Understanding masking helps parents respond with compassion instead of confusion — and helps schools create spaces where children don’t need to hide who they are.

FOLLOW for the Educator Edition later today.

Our Masking Toolkit for Parents & Educators explores why masking happens, how to spot it, and what really helps.
It’s filled with practical strategies to support emotional safety at home and in the classroom.

Download it from The Contented Child at link in comments or via our Linktree Shop in our Bio.
