1. If your child doesn't like surprises, pre-arrange your trick or treat stops with family or friends. This way you can let your child know who they will be seeing, and even what treats they will receive.
2. If being out in the dark isn't something your child will enjoy, then instead of trick or treating opt for pumpkin picking, daytime Halloween activities or a cosy film at home.
3. Use trick or treat cards to hand out at the houses you visit - with whatever wording best suits your child to give a short explanation and say thank you. This can take the pressure away from having to talk to lots of people, and removes any misconceptions that the child is being rude by not communicating verbally.
4. Try making a map to follow if you already know what route you will take for trick or treating. This can give children something to focus on away from the noise and busyness around them.
5. Ear defenders or noise cancelling headphones may help keep the many sounds going on feel more manageable.
6. Pick a costume that your child feels comfortable in. It can be anything - it doesn't have to be scary! The main thing is that they are comfortable (and warm enough!)
7. Be prepared to change your plans at the last minute. An excited child can quickly become anxious and overwhelmed, and its ok to decide that a plan isn't working out and make a new plan based on how your child is feeling in the moment.
8. Most of all, do whatever works for you, your children and your family 🎃
