❤️ The song “Heaven”, written by David Byrne of Talking Heads, is a piece filled with quiet longing, a reflection on hope, illusion, and the search for something better.

For many, the most haunting interpretation came from Q Lazzarus, whose voice carried the song into the heart of the film Philadelphia. The moment was unforgettable.

Philadelphia was one of the first major films to bring the reality of HIV/AIDS, stigma, and discrimination into mainstream cinema. It gave audiences a deeply human story at a time when so many people living with HIV were misunderstood, marginalised, and unheard.

Like the AIDS Memorial Quilt, the film and its music helped make the invisible visible, reminding the world that behind every story is a life, a voice, and a name.

Art remembers. Music remembers. We remember❤️

❤️ Geoffrey Bowers was a young lawyer whose fight for justice became a defining moment in HIV history.

After being dismissed from his law firm in the 1980s following his HIV diagnosis, Geoffrey challenged the discrimination he faced. His story later inspired the groundbreaking film Philadelphia, which helped bring conversations about HIV, stigma, and human dignity into the mainstream.

Geoffrey Bowers died from AIDS-related illnesses in 1987, but his courage and legacy continue to resonate far beyond his lifetime.

Remembering Geoffrey Bowers ❤️

❤️ Gene Anthony Ray, best known for his role as Leroy Johnson in Fame, was a gifted dancer and actor whose talent inspired a generation.

Gene was living with HIV and sadly died from AIDS-related complications in 2003.

Remembering Gene is about more than his career — it’s about honouring a life, a talent, and acknowledging the many artists and performers whose lives were impacted by the AIDS epidemic.

Such news. RIP Martyn Butler OBE 🙏🏼

Such news. RIP Martyn Butler OBE 🙏🏼

It is with deep sadness that we announce that our co-founder, patron and friend Martyn Butler OBE has died.

Martyn was born and raised in Newport and moved to London in the 1970s to work in advertising, cinema and entertainment. On the gay scene he met fellow Welshman Terry Higgins. They would go on to work in Heaven nightclub together, Martyn on the lasers and Terry on the decks.

When Terry became the first named-person to die of an AIDS-related illness in the UK, Martyn joined forces with Terry’s boyfriend Rupert Whitaker to found Europe’s first HIV-response organisation. Terrence Higgins Trust was created in 1982 to humanise the epidemic, support people living with AIDS and share the information that would prevent HIV transmission.

Martyn did the first fundraiser, spoke at the first AIDS conference organised by Gay Switchboard and the Gay Medics Association, designed the first Terrence Higgins Trust leaflet and used his home phone number as the first AIDS helpline.

For five decades he has supported Terrence Higgins Trust, people living with HIV, and fought for LGBT rights.

Brave and deeply kind, Martyn will be sorely missed.

❤️ Princess Diana changed the world’s understanding of HIV and AIDS through simple acts of compassion.

At a time when fear and misinformation were widespread, Diana publicly shook hands with AIDS patients, hugged them, and treated them with dignity, showing the world that HIV could not be spread through touch.

Her actions challenged stigma, humanised those living with HIV, and helped shift public attitudes globally. For many, she offered something rare and powerful: kindness when it was most needed.

Remembering Princess Diana, compassion that changed lives ❤️
