Top Tip Friday- Thumb Ache 👎🏻

Do you struggle with tightness in your hand or thumb? Well this little tip is a fabulous one to help release some tension.

I think the most exercised part of our body is the thumbs. We absolutely batter these muscles with texting, using a computer mouse, typing, using a scissors at the hair dressers just to name a few. If thumbs had abs we would all have them! However, like all muscles they can be at risk of overuse injuries.

This can feel like tightness in the thumb, hands and wrists. You can feel weakness in the thumb when you try and use them or there can be an aches.

Give these little muscles some TLC with this tip 👍🏻

Are you someone that does sit ups in your training programme?

If so, please 🙏 stop. Like completely. No more sits ups ever! Your body will appreciate it. All you are doing is strengthening the flexed position which we causes postural issues.

Most people use their hip flexors when they sit up and these are already in the overworked club for those of us that sit a lot through our jobs.

A better exercise is the 8 point plank. You want to strength the bodies natural corset, not create a bigger C curve in your posture. Think what the core muscles do. They hold us up and support our organs. Like a corset. If you strength the forwards position you just squish everything. This puts all the pressure on the lower back, which in turn affects the upper back. And the problem stays or gets worse.

Challenge what you train regularly and think why am I doing this exercise. Just because it burns when you do it doesn’t mean it’s correct. Our muscles respond to what we do with them. Strength and conditioning is about going back to basics. Working on form and strengthening correct movement patterns.

A few benefits of sports massages are:

1* Break down of adhesions and scar tissue which builds up over time causing tension. Don't ignore those tension spots as they lead to injuries.

2* Increased muscle blood flow which aids in speeding up recovery. Flushing out the toxins will keep you muscles healthy and reduce the risk of injury.

3* Increased range of movement. Tight muscles are shortened muscles. This means your range of movement in less which can affect your weight training or your sports performance.

4* Increased lymph flow and the removal of toxins from the muscles.

5* Relieves muscular pain that can build up from sitting in an office chair or standing on your feet all day

Yesterday I raced at ‘Middle Distance Duathlon Qualifier’ for the European Champs next year. This consisted of a 10.5km run, 56mile bike ride and another 10.5km run.

I came 4th lady overall. And 1st in my age group. I mean I was the only one in my age group 😂 but as my coach says ‘history is made by the people that turn up’.

Race report:

Run 1 - a drop kick to the legs. An all trail route with hills got the ticker going.

Bike - wind, heat, hills and rain. I wanted to quit 8 miles in 😂 I told myself we won’t do this again. Shouted at my legs and told them to sort their lives out. Lots of dark places in the grind.

Run 2 - the same route as run 1 but with the heat it felt like a trip to Mordor. I felt stronger post bike then my last race so that’s good.

Racing isn’t pretty and I needed a 2 minute lie down at the end to catch my breathe. But all the hard work in training means I get opportunities to represent my country in a sport as an GB age group athlete.

Sorry for any delayed messages this weekend. I have been completing the National three peak challenge with my boyfriend.

1350 miles, rain, fog, sunshine and three mountains later with minimal sleep…we completed them all. My dad and brother were our support team throughout. We didn’t do it in the 24 hour time limit but we had huge amount of fun.

🔹🔹TOP TIP FRIDAY🔹🔹

Back to the basic on running. Are you wearing the correct size running shoes??? 📣

⚡️⚡️If you suffer from blisters, toe nail loss, tingling in your feet during your run, toe numbness, aching arches or cramp in your feet - well your shoes might be the wrong size. ⚡️⚡️

Our feet swell when we run or exercise, so we need to give our feet some extra space. We should all go up half a size to a full size in our running shoes. 👟

Having the wrong size shoe can also affect our landing position of the foot.🦶 Wearing running shoes that are too small is like trying to run in heels. 👠We lose stability. We want our toes to have space to spread out.

Shoe Size Guide - there should be a thumb gap space between the end of your big toe to the end of the shoe. 👍🏻
