An ankle sprain happens when the ligaments that stabilise your ankle are overstretched or torn, most often after a sudden twist, roll, or awkward landing during sport, exercise, or everyday activities.

👣 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻
The most common type. The foot rolls inward, placing stress on the ligaments on the outside of the ankle. Frequently seen in running and court sports.
👣 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗔𝗻𝗸𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻
Involves the ligaments that connect the tibia and fibula just above the ankle joint. These often take longer to heal and can feel painful when pushing off or twisting.
👣 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻
Less common. Occurs when the foot rolls outward, stressing the ligaments on the inside of the ankle sometimes alongside other injuries.
💡 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀:
Pain or tenderness, swelling, bruising, stiffness, instability, and difficulty weight-bearing or walking.
🩺 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁:
Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation (R.I.C.E) can help reduce pain and swelling in the first 48 hours, followed by guided rehab to restore strength, mobility, and balance.
👉 If ankle sprains keep coming back or pain lingers, a physiotherapy assessment can make all the difference in getting you back to moving confidently.
