๐Ÿฅ National Croissant Day: A sensory treat to share ๐Ÿฅ

๐Ÿค— National Croissant Day is being celebrated on the 30th of January this year. It might seem lightโ€‘hearted, but for young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) that we care for at In Caring Hands (ICH), this day offers a wonderful opportunity for sensory exploration.

๐Ÿ˜‹ The warm smell of fresh pastry, the soft flaky texture, the gentle sound of a croissant breaking โ€” these small sensory moments can spark curiosity, engagement, and bring plenty of joy.

๐Ÿฅฐ Here at ICH in Cornwall, the carers at our respite bungalow and PMLD day centre use everyday experiences like this to support communication, comfort, and emotional wellbeing. Sometimes the simplest of activities can create the richest of connections.

๐Ÿ”— If youโ€™re a dedicated carer with a heart full of compassion, and youโ€™re based in the UK and are looking to make a real difference to the lives of the people you care for, then weโ€™d love hear from you, so you could become a part of the ICH family. https://in-caring-hands.co.uk

๐Ÿฆ† Big Garden Birdwatch: A sensory opportunity ๐Ÿฆ†

๐Ÿซด At In Caring Hands (ICH) here in St Austell, Cornwall, we use natureโ€‘based activities to support the well-being, communication, and emotional regulation of the young adults with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) that we care for.

โ˜๏ธ The RSPBโ€™s Big Garden Birdwatch, which runs from the 26th to the 28th of January this year, is a beautiful opportunity to slow down, look up, and enjoy the simple joy of nature. For young people with PMLD, sensory experiences like birdsong, movement, colour, and fresh air can be deeply calming and enriching.

๐Ÿฆ This week, we'll be including fun activities such as birdwatching through the window or venturing outside on brighter days to listen to bird song, putting out food on the bird table, and exploring other textures and sounds we discover outdoors.

๐Ÿ”— If youโ€™re a compassionate, dedicated, motivated, thoughtful, UKโ€‘based carer looking to make a real difference to the lives of those you care for, weโ€™d love to welcome you into the ICH family. Find out more about us and our open vacancies on our website: https://in-caring-hands.co.uk

๐Ÿงฆ Odd Socks at In Caring Hands ๐Ÿงฆ

๐Ÿค— In Caring Hands (ICH) provides specialist care for younger people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). Based in St Austell, Cornwall, we offer both a respite centre for short breaks and a day centre where service users can attend during the day.

๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ Odd Socks Day marks the start of Antiโ€‘Bullying Week and is a simple, visible way to champion what makes each of us unique and make a stand against bullying. This year it takes place on Monday the 10th of November https://anti-bullyingalliance.org.uk/anti-bullying-week-2025/odd-socks-day #:~:text=Odd.

๐Ÿ‘ For many people with PMLD, being seen as โ€œdifferentโ€ can mean facing low expectations or exclusion. At ICH we reject that view. Our team meets the differing needs of our service users with compassion and dignity, creating environments where everyone belongs, enjoys meaningful activities, and is supported to take part in life in ways that matter to them.

๐Ÿซ‚ On Odd Socks Day we celebrate individuals and the unique personalities, talents, and friendships that make our community richer.

๐Ÿ˜ Inclusion for people with PMLD ๐Ÿ˜

๐Ÿค— At In Caring Hands (ICH) Cornwall, we provide compassionate, person-centred care for young adults with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). We aim to foster safety, dignity, and meaningful connections in the community.

๐Ÿซด People with PMLD are often overlooked due to assumptions about their abilities. Inclusion means seeing the person first, adapting environments to reduce sensory barriers, while inviting participation that honours individual preferences.

๐Ÿšฅ ICH carers prioritise sensory profiles and, where possible, trial equipment in advance. We use preferred tactile communication and prepare individuals with pre-visit social stories, brief hosts, request adjustments, and model inclusive interactions.

๐ŸŽต We balance safe practice with enabling experiences and train our staff in sensory-aware approaches, widening participation through local partnerships.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Join Our Team - We are growing and need more carers who value kindness, dedication, and empathy. Both day and night shifts are available. For more information or to apply, visit our website: https://www.in-caring-hands.co.uk/

๐ŸŽ† Guy Fawkes Night safety guidance for people with PMLD ๐ŸŽ†

๐Ÿค— In Caring Hands (ICH) is committed to providing compassionate, person-centred care and practical support for individuals with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). Our approach prioritises safety, dignity and quality of life, fostering meaningful connections for those we support.

๐Ÿงจ Understanding the challenges of Guy Fawkes Night

Guy Fawkes Night, celebrated on the 5th of November, can present significant challenges for people with PMLD. The event often involves loud bangs, bright flashes and large crowds. These elements may cause sensory overload, distress, or behavioural crises for those who are particularly sensitive.

๐Ÿ˜ฃ Planning ahead to reduce risk

Careful planning is essential to minimise risks while allowing everyone to join in the festivities. One approach is to watch fireworks from a distance, away from the main event venue. Using noise-cancelling headphones, tested well in advance, can help reduce the impact of loud noises.

๐Ÿ˜Œ Creating a calm and safe environment

In areas where many fireworks are expected, it is often preferable to remain in a calm, familiar environment, such as at home or in our respite centre. Here, noise-cancelling headphones can again be beneficial if they have been introduced beforehand. Additional strategies include closing windows to muffle sounds and curtains to block out flashes. Maintaining dim and predictable lighting and providing access to favourite comfort items all help to reduce sensory surprises.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Join the In Caring Hands team

We are currently recruiting compassionate carers to meet our growing needs. If you are dedicated and value compassion, we welcome you to apply and become part of the ICH family. Both daytime and nighttime shifts are available. For further information and to apply, please visit our website: https://www.in-caring-hands.co.uk/
