💛 Moments of connection: The heart of PMLD care at ICH 💛

🗓️ As March comes to a close, we’re celebrating the gentle, everyday moments that sit at the heart of supporting young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).

🌼 At In Caring Hands (ICH), some of the most meaningful moments we have aren’t planned; they happen in the quiet spaces between activities. A warm smile, a familiar sound, a moment of calm during a sensory session. These small connections help young people with PMLD feel safe, understood, and valued.

👀 Our carers notice the little things: the way someone responds to a favourite texture, the comfort they find in a familiar voice, the spark of recognition when a trusted carer enters the room. These moments build trust, slowly, gently, beautifully.

🤗 Care isn’t just what we do. It’s how we show up, with patience, warmth, and presence. It’s the soft reassurance, the steady rhythm, the emotional safety that helps each young person feel grounded and supported.

💜 Purple Day: Epilepsy awareness in PMLD care 💜

↗️ Purple Day takes place on the 26th of March, and at In Caring Hands (ICH), we’re shining a light on epilepsy for the young people we support with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).

⚡ Many young people with PMLD experience epilepsy, and seizures can look very different from person to person. They may be subtle, brief, or easily missed, which is why understanding each individual’s patterns and cues is so important.

🧠 Epilepsy can affect energy levels, communication, comfort, and daily routines. For some, even small changes in environment, sleep, or health can increase seizure activity.

😓 Our carers are trained to recognise the smallest signs, a shift in breathing, a pause, a change in posture. They will quickly respond calmly, safely, and confidently.

🌙 World Sleep Day: The importance of rest in PMLD 🌙

🛌 World Sleep Day takes place on Friday 13th March, and at In Caring Hands (ICH), we know just how important sleep is for the young people we support with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).

😴 For many young people with PMLD, sleep can be affected by medical needs, sensory differences, muscle tone, positioning, or changes in routine. A good night’s rest isn’t just comforting, it’s essential for wellbeing, emotional regulation, and physical health.

🧸 Our carers pay close attention to each young person’s sleep cues and comfort needs. From creating calm routines to supporting safe sleep positioning, we help make rest feel secure and predictable.

🗺️ Navigating changes in PMLD support 🗺️

↗️ At In Caring Hands (ICH), we understand that for the young people we care for with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), changes and transitions aren’t only about the big milestones. They happen quietly, constantly, and each one can have a meaningful impact.

👩‍🦱 A new staff member.
🚍 A different vehicle.
💡 A change in lighting.
🛏️ A new piece of equipment.
🕒 A shift in routine.

😧 These everyday changes may seem small to us, but for someone with PMLD, they can feel huge. They influence how safe, settled, and understood someone feels in their environment.

😓 Our carers pay close attention to these small transitions. We take time to notice the subtle cues, a glance, a pause, a change in breathing, that tell us how a young person is experiencing the moment.

🤗 We offer reassurance and create predictable rhythms that help them navigate changes with confidence. Transitions aren’t just about what’s happening around someone, they’re about how they’re supported through it.

🥁 PMLD showing kindness through sensory experiences at ICH 🥁

🫴 At In Caring Hands (ICH), we provide care for young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).

🎶 For young people with PMLD, kindness is hugely important and often begins with small ways of forming a connection - a favourite sound, a calming texture, a moment of shared joy. This can be achieved through sensory activities, a powerful way to express care and build trust.

🪇 Sensory activities are anything that includes light, sound, smell, or texture. From feeling different textures or smelling different scents to making a variety of sounds or light sequences.

🧑‍🌾 It doesn’t have to be complex; simple activities such as gardening, preparing vegetables, or baking (texture and smell) work well. Even making sounds with everyday objects or moving to music can be fun and fulfilling.

📆 February 17th is Random Acts of Kindness Day, and it's the perfect time for us to reflect on the meaningful, gentle, sensory interactions we share each day to help our service users feel included, happy, safe and understood.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Inclusion matters: No one should feel like an island 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

😕 For many young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), the world can feel distant. It’s easy for someone to feel like an island when society moves too fast to notice them, especially when their ability to communicate how they feel and what they need is limited.

😁 At In Caring Hands (ICH) in Cornwall, we care for young people with PMLD. To us, inclusion means bringing the world to our young people through fun group activities, as well as bringing them to the world.

🚌 Our teams support our service users through carefully planned outings that help them feel part of their community: Visits to local parks, cafés, sensory‑friendly spaces, activity centres, and gentle walks by the sea. These moments help build familiarity, comfort, and a sense of belonging.

🤗 Every outing is an opportunity for connection. Every experience is a reminder that no one should be left on the edges of life.

👍 Time to Talk Day: PMLD - every feeling, voice and gesture matters 👎

😶 Time to Talk Day on the 5th of February is all about mental health https://www.mind.org.uk/get-involved/time-to-talk-day/ . This is something that’s important to recognise when caring for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).

🫴 Here at In Caring Hands (ICH), we understand that those we care for are often trapped in a world where communication is difficult and loneliness and depression can take over.

🤐 Interaction often looks very different for someone with PMLD. From a particular glance, sound, gesture, or other form of connection, it’s critical to realise that each can be just as meaningful as the spoken word, and no matter how they communicate, everyone deserves to be heard and understood.

🤗 Our team of attentive carers create a safe, supportive environment in our respite bungalow or day centre here in Cornwall. They are trained to look for the smallest, simplest of signs that tell them what a service user needs or how they feel.

🥐 National Croissant Day: A sensory treat to share 🥐

🤗 National Croissant Day is being celebrated on the 30th of January this year. It might seem light‑hearted, but for young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) that we care for at In Caring Hands (ICH), this day offers a wonderful opportunity for sensory exploration.

😋 The warm smell of fresh pastry, the soft flaky texture, the gentle sound of a croissant breaking — these small sensory moments can spark curiosity, engagement, and bring plenty of joy.

🥰 Here at ICH in Cornwall, the carers at our respite bungalow and PMLD day centre use everyday experiences like this to support communication, comfort, and emotional wellbeing. Sometimes the simplest of activities can create the richest of connections.

🦆 Big Garden Birdwatch: A sensory opportunity 🦆

🫴 At In Caring Hands (ICH) here in St Austell, Cornwall, we use nature‑based activities to support the well-being, communication, and emotional regulation of the young adults with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) that we care for.

☝️ The RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch, which runs from the 26th to the 28th of January this year, is a beautiful opportunity to slow down, look up, and enjoy the simple joy of nature. For young people with PMLD, sensory experiences like birdsong, movement, colour, and fresh air can be deeply calming and enriching.

🐦 This week, we'll be including fun activities such as birdwatching through the window or venturing outside on brighter days to listen to bird song, putting out food on the bird table, and exploring other textures and sounds we discover outdoors.

🔗 If you’re a compassionate, dedicated, motivated, thoughtful, UK‑based carer looking to make a real difference to the lives of those you care for, we’d love to welcome you into the ICH family. Find out more about us and our open vacancies on our website: https://in-caring-hands.co.uk
