🧦 Odd Socks at In Caring Hands 🧦

πŸ€— In Caring Hands (ICH) provides specialist care for younger people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). Based in St Austell, Cornwall, we offer both a respite centre for short breaks and a day centre where service users can attend during the day.

πŸ’β€β™€οΈ Odd Socks Day marks the start of Anti‑Bullying Week and is a simple, visible way to champion what makes each of us unique and make a stand against bullying. This year it takes place on Monday the 10th of November https://anti-bullyingalliance.org.uk/anti-bullying-week-2025/odd-socks-day #:~:text=Odd.

πŸ‘ For many people with PMLD, being seen as β€œdifferent” can mean facing low expectations or exclusion. At ICH we reject that view. Our team meets the differing needs of our service users with compassion and dignity, creating environments where everyone belongs, enjoys meaningful activities, and is supported to take part in life in ways that matter to them.

πŸ«‚ On Odd Socks Day we celebrate individuals and the unique personalities, talents, and friendships that make our community richer.

😁 Inclusion for people with PMLD 😁

πŸ€— At In Caring Hands (ICH) Cornwall, we provide compassionate, person-centred care for young adults with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). We aim to foster safety, dignity, and meaningful connections in the community.

🫴 People with PMLD are often overlooked due to assumptions about their abilities. Inclusion means seeing the person first, adapting environments to reduce sensory barriers, while inviting participation that honours individual preferences.

πŸš₯ ICH carers prioritise sensory profiles and, where possible, trial equipment in advance. We use preferred tactile communication and prepare individuals with pre-visit social stories, brief hosts, request adjustments, and model inclusive interactions.

🎡 We balance safe practice with enabling experiences and train our staff in sensory-aware approaches, widening participation through local partnerships.

πŸ‘‰ Join Our Team - We are growing and need more carers who value kindness, dedication, and empathy. Both day and night shifts are available. For more information or to apply, visit our website: https://www.in-caring-hands.co.uk/

πŸŽ† Guy Fawkes Night safety guidance for people with PMLD πŸŽ†

πŸ€— In Caring Hands (ICH) is committed to providing compassionate, person-centred care and practical support for individuals with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). Our approach prioritises safety, dignity and quality of life, fostering meaningful connections for those we support.

🧨 Understanding the challenges of Guy Fawkes Night

Guy Fawkes Night, celebrated on the 5th of November, can present significant challenges for people with PMLD. The event often involves loud bangs, bright flashes and large crowds. These elements may cause sensory overload, distress, or behavioural crises for those who are particularly sensitive.

😣 Planning ahead to reduce risk

Careful planning is essential to minimise risks while allowing everyone to join in the festivities. One approach is to watch fireworks from a distance, away from the main event venue. Using noise-cancelling headphones, tested well in advance, can help reduce the impact of loud noises.

😌 Creating a calm and safe environment

In areas where many fireworks are expected, it is often preferable to remain in a calm, familiar environment, such as at home or in our respite centre. Here, noise-cancelling headphones can again be beneficial if they have been introduced beforehand. Additional strategies include closing windows to muffle sounds and curtains to block out flashes. Maintaining dim and predictable lighting and providing access to favourite comfort items all help to reduce sensory surprises.

πŸ‘‰ Join the In Caring Hands team

We are currently recruiting compassionate carers to meet our growing needs. If you are dedicated and value compassion, we welcome you to apply and become part of the ICH family. Both daytime and nighttime shifts are available. For further information and to apply, please visit our website: https://www.in-caring-hands.co.uk/

Halloween at In Caring Hands

πŸ€— Here at In Caring Hands in Cornwall, we care for young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).

πŸ‘» This Halloween, our respite centre will be transformed with decorations in communal areas and a weekend full of fun, including baking, pumpkin soup making, sensory pumpkin crafts and games everyone can join in.

πŸš₯ Our carers create activities that focus on sensory engagement, predictability and choice, using lights, textures, smells and simple cause‑and‑effect games to spark curiosity and encourage interaction.

🎣 Recently, our much-loved homemade giant fishing game had to have major repairs due to the extensive use it gets!

πŸͺ΄ Our team of carers is expanding, so if you’re a compassionate, caring person, why not consider joining us? Find out more about ICH by visiting our website: https://www.in-caring-hands.co.uk/

🍎 Apple Day fun at ICH 🍎

πŸ€— Here at In Caring Hands in Cornwall, we care for young adults with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).

🍏 On Tuesday the 21st of October, it’s National Apple Day, where all things apple are being celebrated. We love joining in the fun with our wonderful service users, from making colourful prints using apples as stamps to baking apple cakes; our carers love creating hands-on activities that encourage sensory engagement and bring joy.

🍽️ We also prioritise nutrition: high-quality, nutritious meals and snacks are so important for our service users as they cannot provide this for themselves. Apple Day is a great time to think about this by adding plenty of healthy, fresh ingredients.

πŸ”Ž ICH is growing, and our close-knit, dedicated team is looking for compassionate carers to join us and make a difference every day. Learn more about us and our services by visiting our website: https://www.in-caring-hands.co.uk/

🍰 Cooking up fun times for people with PMLD at ICH 🍰

πŸ₯„ At In Caring Hands (ICH) we care for young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). This month National Baking Week runs from the 14th to the 20th of October and National Chocolate Week follows from the 16th to the 22nd of October, so at ICH we’ll be turning our kitchens into sensory playgrounds!

🍫 Baking and chocolate projects provide rich, multi-sensory experiences that are easy to adapt and highly rewarding. The smells, warm textures and tastes, as well as the sight of colourful decorations, all provide meaningful sensory input that can have a calming, stimulating or soothing effect. Such experiences encourage people with PMLD to engage, express their preferences and feel connected.

☺️ By providing activities like this, we open up the world for people with PMLD, bringing them together and helping them to build social connections, confidence and emotional regulation. We celebrate by enjoying what has been created and giving applause. We also share photos of every achievement with our service users.

πŸ‘‰ Do you fancy turning chocolate frosting into smiles? We’re hiring compassionate, fun people in Cornwall, so bring your warmth, creativity and a love of cake! Learn more on our website and help us bake brighter days together.

🍚 ICH and National Porridge Week & World Porridge Day 🍚

πŸ‚ As Autumn approaches and the days grow cooler, we are reminded that many of the young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), whom we support, are unable to tell us when they are cold or hungry.

πŸ₯£ National Porridge Week takes place from October 7th to 15th, and World Porridge Day is on October 10th, further reinforcing this reminder.

☺️ At In Caring Hands, we aim to minimise any communication barriers that could affect the comfort of our service users. We achieve this by utilising specialised communication techniques and conducting regular comfort checks. These incorporate tailored routines, including consistent mealtimes and warm snacks, to ensure that everyone is comfortable, nourished and safe.

πŸ€— We also remember the bigger picture that World Porridge Day highlights: food security and dignified care for everyone, everywhere.

😢 National Nonspeaking/Nonverbal Awareness Day at ICH 😢

πŸ’β€β™‚οΈ On the 30th of September, it is National Nonspeaking/Nonverbal Awareness Day, a time when we can reflect, honour, and uplift individuals who communicate without words.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Nonverbal and nonspeaking people navigate a world that’s been built around verbal communication. By spotlighting their struggles, we challenge misconceptions, foster empathy, and champion true inclusivity.

❗ Common Challenges Faced by Nonverbal Individuals:

Β· Every aspect of daily life, from expressing basic needs to feeling fully included in their communities.

Β· Difficulty communicating even basic needs, wants, and emotions through spoken language, which can lead to frustration and misunderstandings.

Β· Limited ability to initiate and maintain conversations, impacting peer relationships and overall well-being.

Β· Problems conveying symptoms or discomfort to medical professionals, potentially resulting in inadequate care.

Β· Sensory sensitivities and overload caused by heightened responses to stimuli such as sound, touch, or light, which can trigger anxiety, meltdowns, or withdrawal.

πŸ™Œ At In Caring Hands, every person’s way of communicating is respected and celebrated. Our dedicated team of carers are trained in alternative communication methods such as:

Β· Tac-Pac tactile symbols and sensory story prompts

Β· Switches, buttons and bespoke technology-aided devices

Β· Makaton signing, PECS and personalised symbol boards

Β· Communication books to share each person’s choices and achievements

🧏 We listen, learn and adapt to unique cues because every gesture, glance and touch matters.
