๐Ÿค— Supporting complex needs with confidence at ICH ๐Ÿค—

๐Ÿ’ At In Caring Hands (ICH), our Cornwall based team of carers, supports people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) via our specialist day centre and respite centre. Every person we support has a unique mix of physical, sensory, and communication needs, and our carers adapt confidently to each one.

๐Ÿฅฐ We take a completely personalised approach to ensure the best care for our service users. This includes communication techniques that make understanding as clear as possible, consistent routines that support emotional security, specialist physical care such as safe moving and handling, and close family partnership so families feel heard, supported and involved.

๐Ÿก For families providing care for their loved ones with PMLD, the same principles can make daily life calmer and more meaningful: noticing and responding to small changes, keeping communication predictable, and adding plenty of soothing sensory moments whenever possible.

๐Ÿชด We are expanding our team of carers. If youโ€™re based in the UK and would be interested in joining our Cornwall PMLD team, weโ€™re looking for people who are hardworking, compassionate and eager to make a real difference in the lives of young people with PMLD.

๐Ÿ’™ Supporting Autism Acceptance and PMLD ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ This past week, the 31st of March to the 6th of April, was World Autism Acceptance Week. At In Caring Hands (ICH), we understand the need for acceptance and truly individualised support for the young people we care for with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).

๐ŸŒˆ Many young people with PMLD also experience sensory sensitivities, communication differences, or autismโ€‘related difficulties. These needs shape how they feel, how they connect, and how they experience the world around them.

๐ŸŒผ Our carers adapt to each individual's needs, from creating calm sensory environments to following familiar routines that help young people feel secure, supported, grounded, and understood.

๐Ÿ‘€ Acceptance isnโ€™t just a theme for one week. Itโ€™s an everyday practice. We notice the small cues, respect each personโ€™s pace, and celebrate the unique ways they communicate and connect with us every day.

๐ŸŒŸ Join our team - If youโ€™re based in the UK and want to make a real difference, weโ€™re looking for compassionate people to support young people with PMLD in our respite bungalow or day care centre in Cornwall.

๐Ÿ’› Moments of connection: The heart of PMLD care at ICH ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ As March comes to a close, weโ€™re celebrating the gentle, everyday moments that sit at the heart of supporting young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).

๐ŸŒผ At In Caring Hands (ICH), some of the most meaningful moments we have arenโ€™t planned; they happen in the quiet spaces between activities. A warm smile, a familiar sound, a moment of calm during a sensory session. These small connections help young people with PMLD feel safe, understood, and valued.

๐Ÿ‘€ Our carers notice the little things: the way someone responds to a favourite texture, the comfort they find in a familiar voice, the spark of recognition when a trusted carer enters the room. These moments build trust, slowly, gently, beautifully.

๐Ÿค— Care isnโ€™t just what we do. Itโ€™s how we show up, with patience, warmth, and presence. Itโ€™s the soft reassurance, the steady rhythm, the emotional safety that helps each young person feel grounded and supported.

๐ŸŒŸ Join our team - If youโ€™re based in the UK and want to make a real difference, weโ€™re looking for compassionate people to support young people with PMLD in our respite bungalow or day care centre in Cornwall.

๐Ÿ’œ Purple Day: Epilepsy awareness in PMLD care ๐Ÿ’œ

โ†—๏ธ Purple Day takes place on the 26th of March, and at In Caring Hands (ICH), weโ€™re shining a light on epilepsy for the young people we support with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).

โšก Many young people with PMLD experience epilepsy, and seizures can look very different from person to person. They may be subtle, brief, or easily missed, which is why understanding each individualโ€™s patterns and cues is so important.

๐Ÿง  Epilepsy can affect energy levels, communication, comfort, and daily routines. For some, even small changes in environment, sleep, or health can increase seizure activity.

๐Ÿ˜“ Our carers are trained to recognise the smallest signs, a shift in breathing, a pause, a change in posture. They will quickly respond calmly, safely, and confidently.

๐ŸŒŸ Join our team - If youโ€™re based in the UK and want to make a real difference, weโ€™re looking for compassionate people to support young people with PMLD in our respite bungalow or day care centre in Cornwall.

๐ŸŒ™ World Sleep Day: The importance of rest in PMLD ๐ŸŒ™

๐Ÿ›Œ World Sleep Day takes place on Friday 13th March, and at In Caring Hands (ICH), we know just how important sleep is for the young people we support with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).

๐Ÿ˜ด For many young people with PMLD, sleep can be affected by medical needs, sensory differences, muscle tone, positioning, or changes in routine. A good nightโ€™s rest isnโ€™t just comforting, itโ€™s essential for wellbeing, emotional regulation, and physical health.

๐Ÿงธ Our carers pay close attention to each young personโ€™s sleep cues and comfort needs. From creating calm routines to supporting safe sleep positioning, we help make rest feel secure and predictable.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Navigating changes in PMLD support ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ

โ†—๏ธ At In Caring Hands (ICH), we understand that for the young people we care for with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), changes and transitions arenโ€™t only about the big milestones. They happen quietly, constantly, and each one can have a meaningful impact.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿฆฑ A new staff member.
๐Ÿš A different vehicle.
๐Ÿ’ก A change in lighting.
๐Ÿ›๏ธ A new piece of equipment.
๐Ÿ•’ A shift in routine.

๐Ÿ˜ง These everyday changes may seem small to us, but for someone with PMLD, they can feel huge. They influence how safe, settled, and understood someone feels in their environment.

๐Ÿ˜“ Our carers pay close attention to these small transitions. We take time to notice the subtle cues, a glance, a pause, a change in breathing, that tell us how a young person is experiencing the moment.

๐Ÿค— We offer reassurance and create predictable rhythms that help them navigate changes with confidence. Transitions arenโ€™t just about whatโ€™s happening around someone, theyโ€™re about how theyโ€™re supported through it.

๐Ÿฅ PMLD showing kindness through sensory experiences at ICH ๐Ÿฅ

๐Ÿซด At In Caring Hands (ICH), we provide care for young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).

๐ŸŽถ For young people with PMLD, kindness is hugely important and often begins with small ways of forming a connection - a favourite sound, a calming texture, a moment of shared joy. This can be achieved through sensory activities, a powerful way to express care and build trust.

๐Ÿช‡ Sensory activities are anything that includes light, sound, smell, or texture. From feeling different textures or smelling different scents to making a variety of sounds or light sequences.

๐Ÿง‘โ€๐ŸŒพ It doesnโ€™t have to be complex; simple activities such as gardening, preparing vegetables, or baking (texture and smell) work well. Even making sounds with everyday objects or moving to music can be fun and fulfilling.

๐Ÿ“† February 17th is Random Acts of Kindness Day, and it's the perfect time for us to reflect on the meaningful, gentle, sensory interactions we share each day to help our service users feel included, happy, safe and understood.

๐Ÿ”— If youโ€™re a compassionate, thoughtful, UKโ€‘based carer looking to make a real difference, you may be interested in joining the In Caring Hands family. Discover more about the career opportunities we have available at: https://www.in-caring-hands.co.uk/learning-disability-services/

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ Inclusion matters: No one should feel like an island ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ

๐Ÿ˜• For many young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), the world can feel distant. Itโ€™s easy for someone to feel like an island when society moves too fast to notice them, especially when their ability to communicate how they feel and what they need is limited.

๐Ÿ˜ At In Caring Hands (ICH) in Cornwall, we care for young people with PMLD. To us, inclusion means bringing the world to our young people through fun group activities, as well as bringing them to the world.

๐ŸšŒ Our teams support our service users through carefully planned outings that help them feel part of their community: Visits to local parks, cafรฉs, sensoryโ€‘friendly spaces, activity centres, and gentle walks by the sea. These moments help build familiarity, comfort, and a sense of belonging.

๐Ÿค— Every outing is an opportunity for connection. Every experience is a reminder that no one should be left on the edges of life.

๐Ÿ‘ Time to Talk Day: PMLD - every feeling, voice and gesture matters ๐Ÿ‘Ž

๐Ÿ˜ถ Time to Talk Day on the 5th of February is all about mental health https://www.mind.org.uk/get-involved/time-to-talk-day/ . This is something thatโ€™s important to recognise when caring for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).

๐Ÿซด Here at In Caring Hands (ICH), we understand that those we care for are often trapped in a world where communication is difficult and loneliness and depression can take over.

๐Ÿค Interaction often looks very different for someone with PMLD. From a particular glance, sound, gesture, or other form of connection, itโ€™s critical to realise that each can be just as meaningful as the spoken word, and no matter how they communicate, everyone deserves to be heard and understood.

๐Ÿค— Our team of attentive carers create a safe, supportive environment in our respite bungalow or day centre here in Cornwall. They are trained to look for the smallest, simplest of signs that tell them what a service user needs or how they feel.

๐Ÿ”— If youโ€™re a compassionate, thoughtful, UKโ€‘based carer looking to make a real difference to the lives of others, take a look at our website to find out more about careers at ICH. https://in-caring-hands.co.uk
