Andy Reid MBE - Standing Tall Foundation

Andy Reid MBE - Standing Tall Foundation In October 2009, Corporal Andy Reid MBE stepped on a Taliban improvised explosive device while on patrol in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

The Standing Tall Foundation promote the mental and physical health of all community groups through the provision of counselling, addiction support, Housing and Benefits advice and physical activity initiatives. Injured so badly that it was thought he would not survive, he defied the odds to the extent that, within a month, he was able to meet up with members of his patrol again. Since then as a t

riple amputee, he has gone on to carry out many arduous challenges to raise money and give back to the associations that helped him and his family through difficult times. To assist him in his endeavours, Andy set up the Standing Tall Foundation in March of 2020, perhaps the worst time in modern history to do so. With little in the way of resources and funding he set about assisting people on an individual basis. Along the way he tackled homelessness, attempted suicide, job loss, depression and various mental health scenarios, much of it at his own expense and time. Each fresh case presented a whole new set of circumstances to deal with and resolve or put measures in place to help. The Standing Tall Foundation has now evolved, and promotes the mental and physical health of all community groups through the provision of counselling, addiction support and physical activity initiatives. We further extend this support into the community to help those in financial hardship, including the homeless, via the provision of grants, items and services using the resources secured by the Foundation or those made available to us.

"Having a son with Tourette syndrome, I know the pain, the frustration, and the helplessness families feel"

MEET Daisy, the seven-year-old girl inspired by ‘her hero’ Andy Reid that she is taking on walking her own half marathon to help him reach his goals.

Daisy Cathcart from Moss Bank is a star in the making, she loves the stage and all things drama, but her biggest hero - after learning about inspirational people in school - is Andy Reid MBE.

Rainford’s Andy Reid lost both legs and an arm while on patrol in Helmand Province in 2009, since then he has been awarded an MBE for his charity work, he runs a charity called The Standing Tall Foundation and is now aiming to become the first-ever triple amputee to complete the London Marathon.

Daisy’s mum Claire Cathcart is one of the former members of Team 1C a charity that raised funds for good causes organised by parents of children who had treatment in Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, she was inspired to help form the charity by her son Jake Cathcart who was born with complex heart issues.

As part of her work she has been in contact with Andy, a fact Daisy was amazed by.

Claire said: “Daisy came home telling me all about Andy and saying he is her hero and was honestly beyond shocked when I said I know him and I’ve met him.

“She got told in school about what he’s trying to do with the London Marathon and how brave he is and what he’s been through so I contacted Andy who we see training for the marathon by walking up and down the Rainford bypass on Saturdays and he invited her to go along with him.

“Anyone who knows Andy knows he's a lovely man anyway, but how lovely he was with her made her even more inspired by him and honestly she got a picture with him and was so made up.

"As soon as she was done she said to me she wanted to help him, I did explain she can’t walk the London Marathon with him, and that she is only seven but she was determined.

“We eventually agreed that in her own time and not all in one go she can walk a half marathon for Andy’s charity to help him and she’s needed no persuading she’s determined to help her hero.”

Daisy said: “I have to do loads of work for my challenge, I’m walking a long distance and it hurts my feet but I’m doing a half marathon for The Standing Tall Foundation because guess what?...I’m friends with Andy Reid!

“I went walking with him and his charity do good things and I just want to help him.”

Daisy’s fundraiser, which she is donating fully to The Standing Tall Foundation to help her hero Andy Reid on his London Marathon challenge, is available to donate to here - https://www.justgiving.com/page/daisyisstandingtall

Today Andy pushed himself further than ever before completing an incredible 15 miles in training for next Sunday’s TCS London Marathon at Ruskin Fitness Club.

This wasn’t just another walk. It was the longest. The toughest. And proof of the determination that’s driving him toward something truly extraordinary.

In just 9 days, Andy will take on the full 26.2 miles with 14 hours to cross that finish line. It will demand everything: courage, energy, endurance, and immense physical and mental strength.

Because Andy isn’t just walking a marathon — he’s aiming to become the first ever triple amputee to complete it.

This journey is bigger than one person. Every step he takes is for veterans who are facing life-changing injuries, mental and physical health challenges, addiction, and struggles with housing and welfare.

Raising money for both the Foundation and the Army Benevolent Fund.

If you can, please support Andy in reaching his £50,000 target. Your support will help him achieve the impossible and provide life-changing support to countless others who need it most.

Massive effort and massive well done, you’ve got this! 💪

Not long to go until Andy & Bastion are taking on the TCS London Marathon! 🏃‍♂️🐾

At mile 12, they’ll reach the iconic Tower Bridge — the halfway point. A powerful moment in the race where they can pause, reset, refuel, and gather the strength needed to go again for the final 14.2 miles to the finish line.

That halfway mark isn’t just about distance, it’s about resilience, determination, and pushing forward when it matters most.

They’re running to raise vital funds for the Foundation and Army Benevolent Fund supporting veterans facing mental health challenges, addiction, housing difficulties, and welfare issues.

Every step they take is for those who need support the most.

Let’s get behind them and help make every mile count!
