Thinking about a career in care where people’s independence and dignity come first? Start with purpose, learn the essentials, and keep building your skills.
Step 1: Begin
👉 Clarify your why and be ready to share it at interview.
👉 Sort the essentials: right to work, two references, DBS.
👉 Shape a clear CV that highlights reliability, communication, and any caring experience.
👉 Apply to providers that invest in training, shadowing, and supervision.
Step 2: Learn
👉 Complete core training in safeguarding, moving and handling, first aid, infection control, medication awareness, care planning, and record keeping.
👉 Shadow experienced carers, ask practical questions, and practise until competent.
👉 Communicate clearly, protect dignity, document well, and escalate concerns early.
Step 3: Grow
👉 Follow your strengths into areas like dementia, learning disabilities, mental health, end of life, or complex care.
👉 Work toward Level 2–3 qualifications and keep up regular refreshers.
👉 Join peer learning, seek a mentor, log CPD, and explore roles such as Senior Carer, Coordinator, Trainer, or Registered Manager.
