Thank to Wendy for this recent review after attending a Saturday blended Paediatric First Aid course. We run these regularly to enable childcarers to attend on days that don't impact their working week as pulling them out of ratio in a childcare setting can be difficult to manage.

It was Wendy's 4th time attending a Paediatric First Aid course with us - that makes her a definite loyal customer!

Thank you to Tom Kingsley for these lovely words. Tom attended his first Emergency Paediatric First Aid course as a new foster carer, and we were so impressed with the speed with which he gained the skills needed.

Well done Tom!

⚠️IMPORTANT - HEALTH IMPLICATIONS - FIRST AID KIT CHECK REQUIRED⚠️

The UK Health Security Agency (formerly Public Health England) has advised businesses and individuals to remove some brands of cleansing wipes from first aid kits due to a public health risk. These are non-sterile wipes.

"There have been 59 confirmed cases in an outbreak of Burkholderia stabilis identified in the United Kingdom from 2018 and up to 3 February 2026, associated with several non-sterile alcohol-free wipe products. These have included some serious infections in addition to the attributable death.

As previously communicated, the following products were found to be contaminated with the strain of Burkholderia stabilis causing the current outbreak:

* ValueAid Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes
* Microsafe Moist Wipe Alcohol Free
* Steroplast Sterowipe Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes

Testing also revealed contamination of Reliwipe Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes, with a Burkholderia strain not related to the outbreak cases.

These products, which may have been used for ‘skin cleansing’ and cleaning in or around wounds have been withdrawn from sale, but may still be found in some first aid kits and in people’s homes. Patients should be advised to check for these wipes in their home, including in first aid kits. Those who still have any of the affected products should stop using them immediately and dispose of them in standard household waste."

PLEASE check your first aid kits and dispose of any of the wipes pictured. The general risk is deemed to be low, but at particular risk are those whose immune systems are compromised so please follow UKHSA advice.

It's National Bubble Wrap day - but how on earth does that relate to anything that Winterbury Training does?

On Saturday I spent the day with 14 brilliant childcarers, mostly childminders, working with them to improve their knowledge of Young People's Mental Health (with a 100% pass rate on the qualification - well done all!).

One of the many themes of the training is looking at how 'helicopter parenting' (hovering to help your child through life's adversities) or 'lawnmower parenting' (clearing the way to give them a smooth path through life) is really not helpful.

Removing obstacles from children's lives might seem laudable, but it removes the opportunities for children to build resilience - the ability to bounce back from adversity. If they don't face adversity, how do they learn to bounce back from it?

We watched an excerpt from Dick Moore's TedX talk - Dancing or Drowning in the Rain? It's powerful, and looks at how the failure to build resilience in our children can have catastrophic consequences. It'sthought-provoking, and well worth the 18 minutes to watch it (TW - su***de - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wstksuaSMD4). Giving our children the ability to weather the storms of life is one of our most important roles as parents and this talk really brings that home.

So, don't bubble wrap children! They need to learn to manage risks themselves, to build their resilience and to weather their own storms - and to know that you're there to support them if needed, but not to 'helicopter' or 'lawnmower' their route...

Thank you to Shelby for this recent review - it was a pleasure to have her along to renew her Paediatric First Aid.

🌿 Today is Houseplant Appreciation Day. 🌿

Outdoors, I'm pretty good with plants, but indoors I don't have such green fingers... But, I have managed to nurture some houseplants and whilst I don't talk to them and encourage them to thrive with kind words, I do definitely appreciate them!

Not just for their fresh, green welcome in the room though. They have loads of benefits, including:

🪴Better air quality - removing indoor air pollutants and increasing humidity
🪴Reducing stress, improving wellbeing and promoting calm
🪴Boosting concentration, improving memory and increasing productivity
🪴Making indoor spaces feel softer and more welcoming
🪴Giving you a sense of achievement when you remember to water it (or when it decides to thrive even without much attention!)

The image below is our lounge (sadly now minus the Christmas decor around the hearth ☹️) with our hardy houseplants.

Do you have houseplants and appreciate them??
