Humans Vs Sprouts!!๐Ÿฅ—

Every Christmas, sprouts take out more people than you'd think..
๐ŸฅœSo do grapes, nuts, turkey, Maltesers, toffees, cocktail sausages, cherry tomatoes - they are, of course, some of the causes of choking.๐Ÿ…

๐ŸฝTo try to avoid it, cut up food into small pieces, and encourage children to eat slowly. Take care when chatting & laughing at the same time as eating - choking is often caused by 'breathing in' food.

If someone should choke and be unable to cough effectively:
๐ŸŒ€Phone 999๐ŸŽ…๐Ÿป
๐ŸŒ€Lean the casualty forward
๐ŸŒ€Hit them sharply on the back, between the shoulder blades, up to 5 times
If this doesn't dislodge the item...
๐ŸŒ€Administer up to 5 abdominal thrusts
If it still hasn't dislodged, repeat the back blows, then abdominal thrusts, then back blows etc, until either the item dislodges or the casualty becomes unconscious (in which case begin CPR)

๐Ÿ“ฝCheck out the short video - less than a minute but demonstrates exactly how to do this sequence - it might just save a life!

๐ŸŽ…๐ŸปHave a great Christmas!๐ŸŽ„

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธCandles - beautiful to look at, some have gorgeous fragrances... but are they a disaster waiting to happen?

๐ŸŽ„Candle-related fires increase by 40% every December.

๐Ÿ”ฅThey look pure and innocent, then WHOOSH! The flame catches your curtains, or tree...

Simple rules:
๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธNever leave a lit candle unattended
๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธThink about where your place them, and where the flame may go if there was a gust of wind from an open door or movement
๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธIf anyone catches alight, STOP - DROP - ROLL and phone 999

Treat any burns:
๐Ÿ’งCool using cool (not cold) running water for a minimum of 20 minutes (yes, really!)
๐Ÿ’Remove any tight clothing or jewellery near the burn, but don't remove anything stuck in it
๐Ÿ‘จโš•๏ธIf there is an open wound cover the burn gently with cling film to protect from infection, and ensure the casualty is seen by a medical professional
๐ŸฅAlso get medical help if the burn is near the airway (head, throat, chest); larger than 5 hands (for superficial, red burns) or 1 hand (partial thickness, blistered burns) - use the ; casualty's hand to size the burn; encircles a limb; covers a whole hand or foot; or caused by electricity or chemicals. Have a lower threshold for young children or the elderly

๐Ÿ’CHRISTMAS TOP TIP...๐ŸŽ

โค๏ธ๐ŸฉนThe number of heart attack casualties sees a spike around Christmas, but there is cheap, easy measure you can take to be more prepared should the worst happen.

๐Ÿ’ŠBuy aspirin. But not just any old aspirin. The 300mg aspirin tablets, NOT the 75mg which are readily available in bargain and discount stores. You might need to visit a pharmacy or a supermarket (Waitrose and Tesco both sell them off the shelf - other supermarkets are available!) - but my guess is you'll be visiting one of those over the next 10 days anyway...

๐Ÿ’ŠIf you phone 999 reporting chest pain, you'll be directed to chew (yes, chew - yum!) 300mg of aspirin if possible. As well as it's painkilling properties, aspirin also makes the blood less sticky - an important side effect when heart attacks are usually caused by blockages (clots) in the arteries fueling the heart with oxygenated blood. If you can stop further cells sticking to the existing clot and therefore limit its size, you can help to limit its impact.

โ“Why 300mg tablets and not 4 x 75mg?
Have you ever chewed an aspirin? Let alone 4, when you're feeling worse than ropey? 1 is better than 4, believe me!
โ“And why chew it?
It absorbs through the tissue in the mouth and into the bloodstream quicker than if swallowed and digested, hence the instruction to chew it.

๐Ÿ’ŠObviously, don't chew an aspirin if you are allergic to aspirin, or under 16. But otherwise this simple action could save a life - but only if you have aspirin close at hand.

๐ŸŽ„So... add 300mg aspirin to your Christmas shopping list. 50p in Tesco, 55p in Waitrose (Waitrose are ๐Ÿ‹lemon flavoured - I know, because I've chewed one. They still taste disgusting... and Tesco might be flavoured too, but I don't know so I'm paying the extra 5p for the Waitrose ones!).

๐Ÿ’ฐIt might be the best 50/55p you spend this Christmas - or at any time of the year.

The Resuscitation Council UK released their new guidelines at the end of October - and there are a few significant differences to the protocols we teach on first aid courses.

As a service to the business community, I am delighted to announce that Winterbury Training is running a FREE update webinar in early January. We welcome anyone to attend, whether you completed your last training course with us or an alternative provider. The same session is repeated so you need only book one of the three date /time options. With first aid qualifications lasting for 3 years, many people will find their renewal is several months or even years away, making this webinar a must-attend for all workplace first aiders to remain up to date and confident to act in an emergency.

๐—•๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ธ: https://lp.winterburytraining.co.uk/

The HSE L74 Regulations requires workplace first aiders to keep their skills up to date, and this is an easy, quick way to meet that requirement. The content is the same on each webinar session, so sign up for the one which best suits your diary, share the opportunity with other first aiders in your workplace (or outside it!) and settle down with a cuppa in the comfort of your own workplace or home. We'll send you a PDF of the changes after the webinar so you can refer back to them when needed.

Please feel free to share this opportunity with your networks - the more people we can update, the better! If you have any queries please do get in touch - you're welcome to message, email (info@winterburytraining.co.uk) or phone us (01722 449299).

Need medical help out of hours?

Heading into the weekend, with a crisis in our hospitals from 'winter pressures', the record flu cases for the time of year and the usual viruses doing the rounds... where is the most appropriate place to go for medical help?

Our local hospitals are already struggling, so you can help them by using the best route to treatment, helping to stop the spread of illnesses to vulnerable people by taking precautions (mask anyone?) and only using A&E if it really is a life-threatening or serious accident or emergency.

The following information has been posted by our local hospital, Salisbury District Hospital. If you aren't in the Salisbury area, look for local facilities to you that are appropriate for your needs - for example many minor injury units or treatment centres have x-ray facilities to save you needing to attend A&E; pharmacists can prescribe antibiotics in some instances, and sometimes self-care is most appropriate.

"๐Ÿ’ŠPharmacy โ€“ local expert advice
๐Ÿ“ฑNHS 111 โ€“ when you are not certain and or need advice on the most appropriate service to access
๐ŸฅLocal Minor Injuries Unit โ€“ Located in Andover, this service can help with treating minor head injuries, facial and eye injuries and fractures
๐ŸฅSalisbury Walk-in GP Service โ€“ 18:30 to 22:00 weekdays and 08:00 โ€“ 20:00 weekends
๐ŸฅGP โ€“ Follow usual routes for appointments
Please be aware that extended waiting times are likely, while we prioritise the most seriously unwell patients.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding. For further advice on staying well and choosing the right service this winter, visit our stay well this winter webpage https://www.salisbury.nhs.uk/stay-well-this-winter/"

Hopefully you won't needit, but if you do, choose wisely and help the NHS to help you.

๐ŸŽ„Are you going out to your works Christmas party this weekend?๐Ÿ•บ๐Ÿ’ƒ

๐Ÿน๐Ÿท๐ŸธFortunately the weather forecast is looking reasonably mild, but alcohol, dancing, and unfamiliar surfaces might equal slips, trips and falls! Icy or wet weather adds a further hazard to the party...

๐Ÿค”Don't just lift someone who has ended up on the floor - check for responsiveness, pain or bleeding first. Remember that alcohol can mask pain and symptoms, too! Consider your own safety when helping - if there are obtacles, trip hazards or a danger that you might be pulled over by your casualty then take precautions - we don't want to add to the casualty total!

๐Ÿค”Was the fall mechanical (i.e. caused by something physical, rather than by a medical problem)? If you're unsure, err on the side of caution and get them checked out, and if you suspect an injury has been caused it might be appropriate to call 999 or take a taxi to A&E depending on the situation. You can always phone 111 for advice.

Enjoy your Christmas parties!! ๐Ÿฅณ๐ŸŽ‰

๐ŸŽ„Every festive season, there are around 80,000 attendances at Accident and Emergency departments up and down the country, directly related to Christmas. Around 6,000 of these result in hospital admissions. ๐Ÿฅ

๐Ÿค•What accidents or incidents can you think of related to the festivities? Pop your thougths in the comments below!

๐ŸŽ„Are you decorating your house this weekend?? If so, take care!๐ŸŽ„

Every year around 350 people end up in A&E because of fairy lights - including falling when putting them up (DON'T stand on a ๐Ÿช‘chair, a wobby ๐Ÿ’กstool or someone else... get the steps out...), minor electric shocks, burns, and children swallowing spare bulbs!! ๐Ÿ’ก

And that's before we even ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜จ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ to think about the stress involved in untangling them all ๐Ÿ˜

Take your time, be careful and try to stay out of the statistics list...

But if a fall does happen, don't rush to get them (or yourself!) up off the floor - check for bleeding, other injuries and conciousness level, and take it slow and steady getting up. If you suspect a back, neck, head or upper leg injury then it's safer to phone 999 for emergency assistance.

Stay safe!

๐ŸŽ„Do you fancy offering your child(ren) a fun and enjoyable learning experience as part of their Christmas gift this year?

๐ŸฉนComing on a young person's first aid course will give them the skills and confidence to be able to help family and friends in a medical emergency.

๐Ÿค•We provide a very practical, enjoyable and memorable afternoon learning new skills and having fun; they'll leave with a certificate and bandaged like a mummy! A pretty unique Christmas present and one that'll last well beyond the tree coming down.

๐Ÿš‘Winterbury Training also runs nationally recognised and accredited first aid courses for workplaces, both adult and paediatric, and mental health first aider training as well as safeguarding and food safety. You can find more details of our open courses on our website (www.winterburytraining.co.uk) or feel free to DM, phone or email.

It was a busy week of the year, the last courses of the year as far as training is concerned. I'm very grateful for business, of course, but equally glad that the next few weeks are going to allow some breathing space - an operation to remove my gallbladder next Thursday will significantly slow me down anyway! โš•๏ธ

So, what have we been up to??
โœจ A talk about anxiety at the Safer Salisbury meeting
โœจA 2hr food safety training session for lunchtime staff at Sarum St Paul's Primary School
โœจA virtual short session with the team at Hazelwood Arc (alternative provision) to support a new student with epilepsy
โœจYr 10 first aid sessions at Wi******er College
โœจA beautiful pre-Christmas drinks gathering courtesy of Parker Bullen LLP -
โœจA brilliant first aid day with the Young Carers at Wyvern St Edmund's School - fantastic learners who really got stuck in!
โœจDay 9 of the AI bootcamp programme (still ๐Ÿคฏ)
โœจ11 Paediatric First Aiders trained on Saturday, along with a dental therapist for annual BLS training
โœจ10 people from voluntary youth clubs, youth settings and community groups via Community First

๐Ÿคญ As all of our manikins were out on Saturday across our courses, Saturday evening's task was stripping every single lung out and taking all the faces off to sanitise them before they go out on their next course - quite an undertaking! We've had buckets of faces soaking and hanging quite literally all weekend!!

And finally, the ๐ŸŽ„ Christmas decs are up, ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธthe lights are on, โ„๏ธ the heating still isn't fixed (but scheduled in), the pre-op assessment is complete - and this week is for planning for the new year before I'm forced to take it easy for a few weeks (not a bad time of year to do it though - no-one wants to stop the mince pies and the glitter to train in December and I can stay inside and watch Christmas movies all day...) ๐ŸŽ„
